Okay, so I messed around with RIO CARLA today. It was kinda cool, but also a bit of a headache to get going. Here’s how it went down:

First Steps (aka “What am I even doing?”)

First, I had to get my hands on CARLA. You know, the simulator itself. I already had it installed because i played it before. If you don’t have it,you need to get the CARLA simulator up and running. It’s like the playground where all the RIO magic happens.

Getting RIO (aka “More Downloads!”)

Next up, I needed the RIO part. I went to look for how to get started, grabbed the RIO repository. Make sure the version matches whatever CARLA version you’ve got. You really, really don’t want to mix those * can easily cause problems.

Setting Up (aka “The Tricky Part”)

This is where things got a little dicey. I needed to get all the files in the right place. So, I basically copied a bunch of stuff from the RIO download into the CARLA folders. I was extra careful to put things where the guide told me. One wrong move, and it’s like, total chaos.

  • I moved the ‘PythonAPI’ things into the CARLA ‘PythonAPI’ folder. Seemed logical, right?
  • Then there was this ‘Util’ folder. I copied the ‘carla_RIO’ part from inside it into CARLA’s ‘Util’ folder.

I just overwrited some files. I hoped for the best.

Trying it Out (aka “Fingers Crossed”)

With everything (hopefully) in place, I fired up CARLA. It toke a while to load.

Then,I found example files to run and hoped that RIO starts working.

I ran one of the example Python scripts that came with RIO. You know, just to see if anything would blow up. Thankfully, it didn’t! I saw some cars, some sensors doing their thing. It was pretty basic, but hey, it worked!

What I Learned (aka “My Brain Hurts”)

Honestly, it was a bit of a process. Getting everything set up correctly took some patience. But once it was running, it was kind of neat to see all the different sensors and data streams. It made me think about all the possibilities, you know, like self-driving * is amazing.

I think I’ll play around with it more tomorrow. Maybe try changing some settings, see if I can make the cars do something crazier. We’ll see. But for now, I’m calling it a day. My brain needs a break!
