So, I got thinking about Rick Brunson and Patrick Ewing the other day. It wasn’t like some big research project, just messing around in the garage, you know?

My Weekend Project Fiasco
I decided it was finally time to tackle the boxes of old stuff piled up out there. Tapes, magazines, bunch of junk really. My wife’s been on me about it. So, I started digging. Man, what a mess. Dust everywhere. Found some stuff I totally forgot I even had.
- Old college textbooks I swore I’d use again. Nope.
- A box of tangled Christmas lights. Still tangled.
- Half-finished models from years ago.
Anyway, deep in one box, under a stack of old newspapers, I found a beat-up VHS tape. Label was faded, but I could just make out “Knicks Highlights”. Didn’t even know if I still had a VCR that worked.
Finding the Connection
Managed to rig up the old player, and guess what? It was mostly late 90s stuff. And there they were. Ewing, the main man, the legend, battling down low. And Brunson, running the point sometimes, hustling. Wasn’t a star like Ewing, obviously, but he was there, part of that team vibe.
It got me thinking about those teams. Ewing was the constant, the anchor. Guys like Brunson, they were the grinders, the role players you need. You don’t win with just one superstar, right? You need the whole squad doing their part. Watching that old tape, you could see Brunson doing the little things, playing tough defense, making the right pass. He wasn’t flashy, just solid.
It’s funny how you remember things. You always remember the big shots, the dunks from Ewing. But watching that tape, I started noticing the other guys more, the hustle plays. Brunson was definitely one of those guys.

Seeing him on that tape just reminded me of that era. Hard-nosed basketball. And now, seeing his son Jalen doing his thing for the Knicks too… it’s kind of cool. Full circle, I guess. But yeah, that trip down memory lane started just ’cause I finally decided to clean the garage. Found more than just dust.
