Alright, so I’ve been spending a bit more time around horses lately, and one thing I really wanted to figure out was, you know, where do they actually like to be petted? It’s not like they can just tell you, “Hey, a little to the left, please.” So, I decided to do a bit of my own, let’s call it, ‘field research’.

My first go-to, probably like a lot of folks, was the nose. I mean, it’s right there, easy to reach. I’d go up to a horse, hand out, and gently try to pat its muzzle. Some horses were like, “Eh, okay, whatever,” but a lot of them would kinda pull their head back or give me a bit of a side-eye. So, I quickly learned that while some might tolerate it, the nose wasn’t a universal favorite spot. Noted.
Then I thought about their foreheads, right between the eyes. I’d approach slowly, talking to them a bit, and then gently bring my hand up. And hey, a lot of them seemed to dig this! I’d see their eyes soften a little, maybe their ears would relax. That was a good sign. So, forehead and the area between the eyes definitely went on my “good spots” list.
Next, I tried the neck. This one seemed pretty popular too. I’d start near the poll, that’s the bit right behind their ears, and work my way down the crest of the neck, especially under the mane. Lots of horses would lean into this, which I took as a big thumbs up. Some would even do that little lip quiver thing – super cute. So, the neck, especially under the mane, that’s a big yes.
My Big Discovery: The Withers!
Okay, so this was a bit of a game changer for me. Someone at the stables mentioned the withers. That’s the bony bump at the base of the neck, just before the back starts. I’d never really thought about petting a horse there. So, I tried it. I went up to this one mare, a usually pretty chill horse, and gave her a good scratch right on the withers. Man, did she love it! She stretched her neck out, did this funny thing with her lip, and pretty much melted. It was like I found the magic button!
So, here’s what I’ve gathered from my hands-on, trial-and-error approach:

- Forehead/Between the eyes: Generally a safe bet, many seem to enjoy a gentle rub here.
- The Neck: Big winner, especially if you get under the mane. They often lean into it.
- The Withers: Oh yeah, this spot can be pure bliss for them. A good scratch here often gets a great reaction.
- The Back: Some like a good, firm stroke along their back, where the saddle would go. But I always watch their reaction; not all are fans.
- The Chest: In between the front legs, some horses really like a good scratch there too.
And what about places to maybe avoid, or at least be super careful with? Well, from my experience:
- The Muzzle/Nose: Hit or miss. Some tolerate it, many don’t seem thrilled. I approach this one with caution now.
- Ears: I learned this the hard way with one horse. Reached for an ear, and got a very clear “nope” with a head toss. Some horses are fine with it, especially if they know you, but it’s not a go-to for me anymore with a new horse.
- Flanks (their sides, near the belly): This area can be ticklish or sensitive. I’ve seen horses get a bit jumpy if you touch them there unexpectedly.
- Legs: Generally, I don’t go for petting legs unless I know the horse really well or I’m checking something.
- Under the Tail: Yeah, just don’t. That’s their private zone.
The biggest thing I learned, though, is to watch the horse. They tell you a lot with their body language. If their ears are pinned back, if they swish their tail hard, if they tense up or try to move away – they’re not enjoying it. But if they lean in, get soft eyes, maybe even try to groom you back, then you’ve found a good spot. It’s been a fun learning process, and definitely makes my time with them more rewarding when I feel like I’m giving them a pet they actually enjoy. Still got lots to learn, but this is what I’ve picked up so far from just trying things out and paying attention!
