Alright, so I wanted to figure this whole thing out the other day. My buddy, let’s call him Steve, finally got Red Dead Redemption 2 on his PC. I’ve been playing it on my PlayStation for a while now, and we were getting all excited, you know, thinking we could finally team up in Red Dead Online, cause some mayhem, maybe hunt some bounties together. The dream, right?

So, the first thing I did was boot up my PS5. Steve fired up his PC. We were both in the game, ready to go. I went into the online menu, started looking for a way to invite him. Couldn’t see his name, obviously. He did the same on his end. We figured, okay, maybe there’s a specific “friends” system within Rockstar’s Social Club that bridges the gap. We spent a good chunk of time poking around in there, sending friend requests through the Social Club itself, thinking that would be the key.
Still nothing. We could see each other as friends on the Social Club, but no option to join each other’s game session across the platforms. That’s when I started to get that familiar feeling, the one where you think, “Uh oh, this might not work the way I thought.”
My “Investigation” Process
So, my next step, naturally, was to hit the web. I started searching around, you know, typing in the usual queries. I wasn’t looking for fancy articles, just trying to get a quick, clear answer. I waded through a bunch of forum posts, some old, some new. It’s always a bit of a mess, trying to find current info.
I specifically looked for:
- Official statements from Rockstar.
- Recent experiences from other players.
- Any news articles that might have covered updates to the game.
It took a bit of digging, sifting through opinions and outdated info. You know how it is, someone says one thing, someone else says another. But eventually, a pretty consistent picture started to form, and it wasn’t the one I was hoping for.

The general consensus, after all that, was pretty clear. I kept seeing the same answers crop up. It became obvious that what we were trying to do just wasn’t built into the game.
The Outcome of My Digging
And yeah, after all that, I confirmed it. Red Dead Redemption 2 Online does not support cross-platform play. Not between PlayStation and PC, not between Xbox and PC, and not even between PlayStation and Xbox. Everyone is pretty much siloed into their own platform ecosystem.
It was a bit of a letdown, to be honest. Steve was pretty bummed too. We were really looking forward to it. You’d think with a game that massive and popular, they’d have found a way to make it happen by now. I mean, plenty of other big titles manage it. But I guess not this one, at least not yet.
So, that’s my little journey into finding that out. We just had to accept that our cross-platform posse dreams were just that – dreams. We’ll just have to stick to playing our own separate online sessions. It is what it is, I suppose. At least now I know for sure!
