You know, I was just scrolling through some old fight clips the other day, specifically some Jon Jones stuff. And it hit me – I’ve seen the guy fight a dozen times, but I never really paid attention to his tattoos. Like, what are they? What do they mean? So, naturally, I decided to do a bit of digging. My own little investigative project, you could say.
First thing I did was just pull up a bunch of images. Fight photos, weigh-in pics, even some of those candid gym shots. It’s amazing how different tattoos can look depending on the lighting and angle, you know?
The Obvious Ones
Okay, so the big one, the one everyone probably notices, is that script across his chest. Took a bit of squinting on some of the action shots, but it’s pretty clearly Philippians 4:13. I had to look up the exact wording, but it’s that famous line: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Makes sense for a guy in his line of work, I guess. Gives you that mental edge.
Then there’s the “BONES” tattoo. Can’t miss that one. It’s his nickname, after all. I’ve seen it pretty clearly on his upper back/shoulder area in a few shots. It’s bold, straightforward, just like his fighting style sometimes.
The Trickier Bits
Now, beyond those, it got a little more like detective work. I’m pretty sure I saw some other designs, but they’re not always crystal clear. Like, on his right arm, there seems to be some kind of tribal pattern. It’s hard to get a definitive look at the whole thing because it wraps around. You see glimpses of it when he’s grappling or throwing a punch.
I also thought I saw something on one of his ribs or side, maybe even his leg, but again, a lot of the photos are either blurry from movement, or it’s partially covered. You’d think with all the cameras at these events, there’d be super clear shots of everything, but nope! Still a bit of a mystery on some of the smaller pieces, at least from what I could easily find. You spend ages zooming in on grainy photos, and you’re still not 100% sure what you’re looking at.
Why I Even Bothered Looking So Hard
It’s kinda funny actually, why I spent so much time on this. My brother-in-law, see, he’s a massive MMA nut, and he was trying to make some custom art for his man cave. He wanted to get details of famous fighters, right down to their tattoos. He’s not the most patient guy when it comes to searching for stuff online, so he basically offloaded the “Jon Jones tattoo research” onto me because I’m “good with computers” or whatever, and I apparently have “too much free time.” So there I was, sifting through hundreds of photos, zooming in, trying to decipher blurry ink. All for his wall art project that he’ll probably get bored of in six months and ask me to research someone else. But hey, at least I learned something, right? And now I can spot those tattoos from a mile away during a fight.
So yeah, that’s my little journey into the world of Jon Jones’s tattoos. Not a crazy amount of them compared to some other fighters I’ve looked up since, but each one seems to have its place. It’s always interesting to see what people choose to put on their skin permanently, especially when they’re in the public eye so much.
