Alright, so folks have been pinging me about Antwerp, asking if it’s really worth the trip. It’s funny, because before I went, I had this vague idea of it being all about diamonds and fashion, you know? So, I figured, why not, let’s go check it out myself. I just packed a small bag one weekend, really on a whim, after a particularly draining week at my old gig. Needed a change of scenery, big time.

First Steps and That Train Station
Landed in Antwerp, and the first thing that hits you is the train station, Antwerpen-Centraal. Man, I’ve seen a few train stations in my time, but this one? It’s something else. I just stood there for a good ten minutes, craning my neck like a proper tourist. It felt more like a palace or a massive, ornate museum than a place where trains just roll in and out. Seriously, I just wandered around the main hall for a bit, taking it all in before even thinking about where I was headed next.
Wandering Around and What I Saw
So, I eventually got my bearings and started walking. My plan was, well, I didn’t really have a solid plan. I like to just get a feel for a place. I found my way to the Grote Markt, the main square. It’s got all those old guildhall buildings with the pointy roofs, pretty impressive. The Cathedral of Our Lady is right there too, massive thing. I popped in for a look. It’s huge, and they’ve got some Rubens paintings inside, which was cool to see, even if I’m not a massive art buff. I just sort of ambled through the little side streets, checking out the old buildings.
I did try to find the “fashion district” because, you know, Antwerp’s supposed to be this big fashion hub. And yeah, there are some fancy shops, for sure. But honestly? It didn’t grab me as much as I thought it would. Maybe I’m just not that into high fashion. I spent more time looking for a decent place to get some frites, if I’m being honest.
- Tried the famous Belgian frites, obviously. Found a little stall, got a big cone with andalouse sauce. Pretty good, can’t complain.
- Drank some Belgian beer. Found a cozy little bar, asked the bartender for a recommendation, and just enjoyed people-watching.
- Walked by the Scheldt river. It was a bit grey when I was there, but it’s always nice to be near water, I think.
The Vibe and Was It Worth It?
The city has a kind of solid, historic feel but also felt pretty modern in other parts. It wasn’t overly crowded when I was there, which was nice. I could just wander at my own pace.
Now, here’s the thing. I actually went to Antwerp because I was trying to track down some specific old comic books. I’d heard there were some legendary shops there. This was my secret mission, more than the fashion or diamonds. I spent a whole afternoon ducking into these little, dusty shops. And you know what? I didn’t find the exact ones I was looking for. Total bust on that front. I was pretty bummed, actually. I’d built it up in my head, thought I’d uncover some hidden treasure. It’s funny how you can go to a place with one expectation, and it just doesn’t pan out. That part was a letdown, and for a bit, I was like, “Man, why did I even bother?”

But then, later that evening, I stumbled upon this amazing little chocolate shop, not one of the big famous ones, just a tiny place. The owner was super passionate, let me try a few pieces. We got chatting, not about comics or fashion, but just about chocolate and life in Antwerp. It was a simple thing, but it kind of turned my mood around.
So, is Antwerp worth visiting? If you’re expecting some mind-blowing, life-changing experience from just the big sights, maybe temper that a bit. For me, it wasn’t about ticking off a list. The train station was genuinely awesome. The old town is charming. The frites and beer are a must. But that comic book hunt falling flat really colored my trip for a while. It reminded me that sometimes it’s not the big things, but the small, unexpected connections or moments that make a trip memorable.
So yeah, I’d say it’s worth a visit, especially if you’re already in that part of Europe. Go for the architecture, the history, the snacks. But also, just go to wander and see what little surprises you find, or don’t find. It’s a solid city. Not my absolute favorite ever, if I’m being brutally honest, probably because of my failed comic quest, but definitely glad I went and saw it for myself. It’s got character, that’s for sure.
