So I heard about this Tom Fornelli beginner tutorial thing promising basics in 10 minutes. Sounded perfect for my lazy evening, honestly. Fired up the computer, cup of cold coffee beside me.

Found the video file – no fancy setup, thank god. Hit play right away. Tom starts talking, seemed friendly enough. Said we’d cover the absolute starting points. Good, that’s what I needed.
First thing he does is open that weird program window where you type commands. Black screen, scary letters. He typed something simple like hello, pressed enter. Okay, cool, nothing exploded. I copied him. Saw the same dumb message pop up on my screen. Felt like a tiny victory already.
Getting Stuck Already
Then it got real. He started showing different commands, telling me to move files around like putting socks in drawers. Typed move this there. Did exactly that. Screen just blinked at me. “Did it work?” Tom asks in the video. Dunno, man! It didn’t scream at me, so maybe?
- Problem: He said “use the ls thingy”. What’s ls? Sounded like a mistake. Tried typing ‘l’, ‘s’, pressed enter.
- Result: A bunch of gibberish files showed up! Oh! It means “list stuff”. Why not just call it “list stuff”? Made me pause the video just to grumble.
Annoying Copy-Paste Struggle
Next bit was about folders. Making them, going inside them. Sounds easy. He types go inside. Did that. Nothing. Tried cd yourname, like he mumbled later. Error message. Frustrating! Realized I had to type the actual folder name MY computer had, not “yourname”. Video didn’t make that super clear. Lost a good 3 minutes just typing wrong names and getting angry.
Had to rewind twice. Cold coffee got warmer by accident sitting there.
Final Stretch – Kinda Works?
He wrapped up showing how to open a simple file you just moved. Typed open *. Annnnnd it opened! In that basic text viewer thing. Honestly, seeing my own text file pop up after all that felt weirdly satisfying.
So yeah, “10 minutes”? More like 25 minutes with my own swearing included. Learned some very basics though – how to make folders, list files, move junk around in that command window. It’s messy, and the names are stupid, but I kinda, sorta understand what I clicked and typed for those results. Tom’s video was okay, but man, explaining why “ls” isn’t called “list” would have saved me a headache. Time for a snack break now. My brain’s full.
