Brushed on the second coat thicker this time, trying to fix those ugly streaks. Bad idea. Drips everywhere like a leaky faucet. Panicked and tried wiping them off fast with a rag. Just smeared it like a toddler fingerpainting. Waited overnight biting my nails.
Morning Disaster & What Went Wrong
Woke up to a warped, blotchy mess. Some spots glossy like cheap plastic, others dull and fuzzy like old carpet. Felt that rage bubble up in my chest. Grabbed my chisel – started scraping like a maniac. Took chunks of wood with it. Nearly put a hole through my workbench. Why? Because my kid started screaming from the other room – fever hit overnight. Split attention, rushing like an idiot. Stupid.
The Real Breakdown:
- Using thickener in humid garage? Dumb like a brick. Slowed drying way down.
- Foam brush? Trapped bubbles under the goop. Looked like muddy dog crap.
- Sanding between coats? Didn’t wait long enough. Sandpaper gummed up instantly.
- Wiping drips? Rag just redistributed the glop unevenly.
The Cold Hard Truth
Why even try “advanced” techniques when my head’s not in it? Saw those slick YouTube videos and thought, “Easy!”. Reality check smacked me hard. Rushed prep, ignored basic drying time, got cocky with additives. Almost cried holding that ruined board. Not because of the wood – because life keeps crashing into projects. Sick kid, work stress… Should’ve just bought pre-stained shelves.
Sometimes you gotta admit defeat. Painted the whole damn thing black this morning. Done fighting.
