Okay, so I got curious about this whole “George Washington horse” thing. I mean, you always see paintings of him on a horse, right? So, I started digging in, just to see what I could find out.

My Little Research Journey
First, I just hit up Google. You know, the usual. Typed in “George Washington horse” and see what pops up. Lots of stuff about paintings, statues, and some articles about his actual horses.
I learned that he apparently had a few favorite horses. The names Blueskin and Nelson kept coming up. It’s said that Blueskin was the one he rode a lot during the Revolutionary War. Makes sense, I guess, if you’re leading an army, you want a reliable ride!
- Blueskin: Apparently a grey. Sounds majestic, right?
- Nelson: More of a chestnut color, and supposedly calmer than Blueskin.
Then I went down a bit of a rabbit hole looking at different paintings. You’ve got your classic “Washington Crossing the Delaware” – he’s on a horse there, of course. And tons of other portraits where he’s posing all heroic-like on horseback.
I realized that, in those days, horses were a big deal. Not just for war, but for, like, everything. So, it makes sense that Washington, being a prominent figure, would be associated with horses. It was part of the image, I guess.
Honestly, it wasn’t some super deep dive, but it was kind of cool to piece together some info. It’s like, you see these historical figures all the time, but you don’t always think about the everyday details, like what kind of horse they rode!

It is interesting that he had serveral horses to help him. It’s so cool, isn’t it?
