Okay, so today I wanted to mess around with building out the 2014 Netherlands World Cup roster. You know, the one that did pretty well and got third place? I figured it’d be a fun little project. I wasn’t really sure where to start, to be honest, so I just started googling.

First, I just straight-up searched “netherlands roster 2014”. That gave me a bunch of websites, some looked reliable, some not so much. I mostly stuck with the ones that looked like they knew about sports, you know?
Gathering the Players
I created the list based on my research. It was a bit of a pain copying and pasting all the names, and making sure I got the positions right (forward, midfielder, defender, goalkeeper). I ended up with this list:
- Goalkeepers: Jasper Cillessen, Tim Krul, Michel Vorm
- Defenders: Daley Blind, Stefan de Vrij, Daryl Janmaat, Terence Kongolo, Bruno Martins Indi, Joël Veltman, Paul Verhaegh, Ron Vlaar
- Midfielders: Jordy Clasie, Jonathan de Guzmán, Nigel de Jong, Leroy Fer, Arjen Robben, Wesley Sneijder, Georginio Wijnaldum
- Forwards: Memphis Depay, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Dirk Kuyt, Jeremain Lens, Robin van Persie
I double-checked the list a couple of times. I didn’t want to accidentally include someone who wasn’t actually on the team. That would be super embarrassing! It felt a bit tedious, but I got there in the end. Once I had all the player names and positions down, I felt a lot better.
So, yeah, that’s basically how I built the roster. It wasn’t super complicated, just a bit of searching and organizing. I think it turned out pretty accurate! Now I have a neat little reference for the 2014 Netherlands World Cup team. Maybe I’ll do another one of these soon.
