Okay, so the other day I was just scrolling through some stuff online, maybe reading about sports, I can’t quite remember exactly. And this name, Fred Ridley, popped up. It sounded kinda familiar, but I couldn’t place it at all. You know how that happens? A name just hangs there in your brain.
So, I thought, alright, let’s figure this out. Pulled out my phone, opened up a browser. Didn’t do anything fancy, just typed in “who is fred ridley”. Simple as that. Hit search and waited to see what came back.

Right away, a whole load of results showed up. And pretty much everything was pointing towards golf. Like, overwhelmingly golf. Augusta National, The Masters tournament, chairman this, chairman that. Okay, so clearly he’s tied up with golf in a big way. Wasn’t sure if he was a player, or an organiser, or what exactly.

It wasn’t like finding a movie star or something, where you get a neat little box with their picture and bio. This felt a bit more specific, more niche maybe? I had to click around a bit more.
Digging a Little Deeper
I started clicking on some of the top links. Read a few bits here and there. Turns out, yeah, he’s the Chairman of Augusta National. That’s the place that runs the Masters, right? So, a pretty important guy in that world, I guess. I also saw somewhere he actually used to be a golfer himself, won the U.S. Amateur title way back. That was kind of interesting, didn’t expect him to have been a top player too.
It’s funny, you watch these big sports events, like the Masters, and you mainly focus on the players hitting the ball. You don’t always think about the folks running the whole show, making the decisions behind the scenes. It takes a bit of digging sometimes to even know who they are. I remember watching the green jacket ceremony plenty of times, never really registered who the officials were, just focused on the winner.
So, that was my little journey finding out about Fred Ridley. Started with just a name floating around, did some basic searching, clicked a few things, and pieced it together. He’s the head guy at Augusta. Took maybe five, ten minutes? Just satisfying that little itch of curiosity, you know. Now I know who they’re talking about next time his name comes up during golf season.
