Okay, so I wanted to check out this whole Barry Bonds Home Run Derby thing. I’d heard some talk about it, and, you know, I’m a bit of a baseball fan, so I figured, why not?

First, I did a little digging online. Found out Barry Bonds was this superstar baseball player back in the day. We’re talking major home run records here – 762 in his career and 73 in a single season! That’s just nuts if you think about it.
Then, I started looking specifically for the Home Run Derby stuff. Apparently, this whole event is a big deal. It’s like a contest to see who can hit the most home runs, and it gets pretty competitive. They even changed the rules at some point so that batters had five minutes to hit as many homers as they could, and they didn’t count the balls that didn’t go for homers. Plus, hitting a home run stopped the clock. That must have been something to watch!
I found out that the prize for winning the Home Run Derby is crazy, too. We’re talking millions of dollars! Apparently, the winner gets a cool million, and the runner-up gets $750,000. That’s a lot of dough, just for hitting some baseballs!
Now, about Barry Bonds in the Derby, it seems like he was pretty good, but he didn’t actually hold the record. I saw some numbers thrown around, like he hit 17 in one Derby. But then other guys like Larry Walker, Ken Griffey Jr., Bobby Abreu, and Josh Hamilton all hit more. There was even this one Derby where Bonds needed three homers to win, and he hit two into the upper deck, and then one that barely missed! It sounds like it was a pretty epic moment in Home Run Derby history, even if he didn’t win.
I even saw some mentions of a recent Home Run Derby, the 2023 one. Apparently, this guy Vladimir Guerrero Jr. won, which is pretty cool because his dad, Vladimir Guerrero, won it back in 2007. They’re the first father-son duo to ever win, so that’s a pretty neat little piece of history.

Anyway, after all this digging, I realized that the Home Run Derby is a way bigger deal than I thought. I mean, the prize money alone is insane. And even though Barry Bonds didn’t have the record, he still put on a show. It sounds like a lot of these guys did. Maybe I’ll have to watch the next one live. Who knows, maybe I’ll see some history being made.
