Okay, so I’ve been trying to get better at putting, and I heard about this “foot putter” thing. I figured, why not give it a shot? I mean, my putting game could definitely use some work.

Getting Started

First, I grabbed my regular putter and headed out to the practice green. I wanted to get a baseline, you know? See how bad (or good, hopefully) I was before trying anything new. I dropped a few balls and started putting like I normally do. It was… okay. Some went in, some didn’t. Pretty standard for me.

The Experiment

Now for the fun part. I took my normal stance, but instead of focusing on my hands, I tried to feel the putter head with my feet. It felt super weird at first. Like, I was trying to control the club with my toes or something. I imagined my feet were actually “holding” the putter, guiding it back and forth.

  • Step 1: Normal stance, but mentally shift focus to feet.
  • Step 2: Imagine feet are “holding” and controlling the putter.
  • Step3: Try some small and big putts.

I started with some really short putts, just a foot or two. Honestly, it felt kind of silly, but I kept at it. I tried to feel the weight of the putter head swinging back and through, all controlled by my feet (in my mind, anyway). Then I moved back a bit, trying some longer putts. It was definitely a challenge.

The Results (So Far)

Well it is hard to say, I did not become Tiger Woods in a single session. It’s still a work in progress. But, and this is a big BUT, I did notice something interesting. By focusing on my feet, I felt like I was staying more still with my upper body. Less swaying, you know? Which, I think, is a good thing for consistency. I also felt a little more connected to the ground, more stable.

I’m definitely going to keep practicing this. It’s not a magic bullet, but it’s a different way of thinking about putting, and it might just help me improve. Or, at the very least, it’ll give me something to think about other than how much I hate missing those three-footers!
