Okay, so today I wanted to figure out something simple: what fraction of a dollar is a penny? Sounds easy, right? Well, I wanted to walk through it myself, just to be sure I had it straight in my head.

Getting Started
First, I grabbed a few coins from my change jar. I made sure I had some pennies and, of course, I knew I needed to think about a dollar. I didn’t actually need a dollar bill, I just needed to remember what a dollar represents.
Figuring it Out
- I started with the basics: I know a penny is worth one cent. That’s the definition!
- Then I thought, “Okay, how many cents are in a dollar?” I remembered it’s 100 cents in a dollar. Everyone learns that pretty early on.
Putting It Together
So, if a penny is 1 cent, and a dollar is 100 cents, I just put the penny’s value over the dollar’s value in cents. That gave me a fraction: 1/100.
The Answer!
And there it is! A penny is 1/100th of a dollar. I double-checked my thinking, and it made perfect sense. Sometimes it’s good to just go back to the basics and work things out step-by-step!
