So, I decided to pick up some Spanish, just the basics, you know? I figured I’d start with something simple, like counting to ten. I mean, how hard could it be, right?

Eleven Spanish: Basic Words to Get By (Must-Know Words)

I started by, well, looking up how to say “eleven” in Spanish. Turns out it’s “once.” Not what I expected, but okay. I spent a good chunk of time just repeating it to myself, trying to get the pronunciation down. “Once, once, once…” I must have said it a hundred times. My dog started giving me weird looks.

Then, I tried to put it into a sentence, like “I am eleven years old.” In Spanish, that’s “Tengo once años.” I practiced saying that a bunch, too. I felt like I was starting to get the hang of it, even though I kept mixing it up a bit.

Of course, I had to figure out how to say things like “good morning” and “goodbye.” I saw these words and phrases in some articles I found: “Buenos días” and “Adiós.” I figured those were pretty important, so I wrote them down and practiced saying them out loud. I even tried using them in conversations with my family, although they just looked at me like I was crazy.

  • Buenos días – Good morning
  • Adiós – Goodbye
  • Once – Eleven
  • Tengo once años – I am eleven years old

I spent the whole afternoon practicing. I wrote the words on sticky notes and put them around the house. I tried to say them every time I saw them. I might have overdone it a little, because by the end of the day, I was dreaming in Spanish. Well, not really, but I was definitely saying “once” in my sleep.

I know it’s just a small step, but I’m actually pretty proud of myself. I managed to learn a new word, practice it a lot, and I think I’m starting to get a feel for the language. It’s not so scary after all, it’s actually kind of fun. I’m definitely going to keep at it, though. Maybe tomorrow I’ll try learning how to say “twelve.”

Eleven Spanish: Basic Words to Get By (Must-Know Words)

I’ve got to admit, the whole process was a bit of a mess, I tried out a bunch of different things, and I’m sure I made some mistakes along the way. But hey, that’s how you learn, right? You just gotta keep practicing and not be afraid to mess up sometimes. Anyway, I am feeling pretty good about this whole Spanish thing now.

So I think I will keep learning, little by little, everyday, and see what happens.
