Okay, so I’ve been meaning to get more active, and a friend suggested checking out the golf and tennis scene in Santa Clara. I’m no pro at either, but hey, gotta start somewhere, right? So, this past weekend, I decided to dive in.

Scoping Out the Scene
First things first, I did some digging around. I’m not a member of any fancy clubs, so I needed to see what public options were available. I found a few places that looked promising, offering both golf and tennis facilities.
Hitting the Courts
I started with tennis. It has been years since I last held a racquet. I found a public park with some decent-looking courts. Let me tell you, my first few serves were… well, let’s just say they weren’t going over the net. Embarrassing!
- Warming Up: Started with some basic stretches. Didn’t want to pull a muscle on day one!
- Practice Swings: Tried to remember the proper form. Felt super awkward.
- Serving Practice: Disaster. Most balls ended up in the net or way out of bounds.
- Rallying (attempted): Managed a few short rallies with a friend. Lots of missed shots.
After about an hour, I was sweating buckets and my arms felt like jelly. But honestly, it felt good to be out there moving. Even if I was terrible.
Tackling the Green
Next up, golf. I’ve played mini-golf, does that count? I headed to a public driving range to get a feel for things. I rented some clubs, grabbed a bucket of balls, and found an empty spot.
- The Grip: Watched a quick video to get the grip right. It’s harder than it looks!
- First Swing: Completely whiffed it. Didn’t even touch the ball. Classic.
- Making Contact (Eventually): Started to connect with the ball, but the direction was all over the place.
- Finding a Rhythm (Sort Of): Got into a bit of a groove. Still mostly slicing, but a few went straight!
I spent a good two hours just whacking balls. My back started to ache, and my hands were developing blisters. But it was oddly satisfying. Plus, the weather was perfect, so that’s always a bonus.

Final Thoughts
My first foray into Santa Clara’s golf and tennis scene was humbling, to say the least. I’m clearly no athlete. But, I had fun, got some exercise, and enjoyed the beautiful California sunshine. I’m definitely going to keep at it. Maybe with a few lessons… or a lot of lessons. Gotta work on that serve and that golf swing!
It was good to be outdoor and I felt that the body has been used. Even if I am not an expert, I should insist on practicing.
