Saw the news today, Zach Edey rolled his ankle. Ouch. Hope the big fella is alright. Always tough seeing guys go down like that, especially someone with his potential heading towards the draft.

Former Purdue star Zach Edey has rolled his ankle, what does this unfortunate injury mean for his NBA draft stock?

It actually got me thinking back, you know? Reminded me of this one time I was just messing around, playing some pickup ball down at the local court. Nothing serious, just trying to get some exercise in after work.

Wasn’t even a fast break or anything fancy. I just went up for a simple rebound, something I’ve done thousands of times. But when I came down, landed right on someone else’s foot. Twist. Felt that sharp pain shoot right up my leg. Knew instantly I’d done something stupid.

Had to hobble off the court. Felt like a complete idiot, honestly. Just trying to play some casual ball and ended up looking like a sack of potatoes falling over. My buddies helped me get over to the bench. Sat there for a while, watching the swelling start. Great.

The Boring Part That Followed

Ended up having to get it checked out. Doctor confirmed, yup, decent sprain. Told me the usual stuff: RICE – Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. Sounded simple enough, but man, the “Rest” part was the killer.

I couldn’t really do much for a couple of weeks. No gym, no running, barely wanted to walk to the kitchen. It forced me to just… stop. Which is hard for me, I like staying busy, always moving around, tinkering with something.

So there I was, stuck on the couch mostly. Started getting really bored after the first few days. Watched way too much TV. Then I remembered this old Raspberry Pi kit I bought ages ago and never touched. It was just sitting in a box in the closet.

Figured, why not? Couldn’t move much anyway. So I dragged it out. Started looking up beginner projects online. Simple stuff at first.

  • Got the operating system installed. That took longer than I thought!
  • Figured out how to connect to it remotely from my laptop.
  • Tried making an LED blink. Felt like a genius when that finally worked.
  • Then moved on to setting up a little network file share thing.

It wasn’t anything groundbreaking. But it filled the time. And honestly? I actually learned quite a bit. Stuff I’d always meant to learn but never “had the time” for. Being forced to sit still with that busted ankle basically made the time for me.

It’s strange how stuff like that happens. A dumb injury leads to picking up a new little skill or finishing some project you’d forgotten about. Anyway, just a thought triggered by the Edey news. Hope his recovery is smooth. Ankle stuff is the worst.
