Okay, so I’ve been eyeing those State bags for a while, especially the Wellington Cabana Tote. It just looked so perfect for, like, everything – beach trips, farmer’s markets, even just a cute everyday bag. I finally decided to just go for it and make one myself. I’m no sewing expert, but I figured, how hard could it be, right?

Getting Started

First things first, I needed a pattern. I couldn’t find an exact one for the Wellington, so I kind of mashed up a few different tote bag patterns I found online. I just looked for ones that had a similar shape and size. It was a bit of a gamble, but hey, that’s part of the fun!

Then came the fabric hunt. The State bags have this cool, like, woven texture. I spent a good afternoon at the fabric store, feeling up all the different materials. Finally, I found this sturdy, outdoor canvas that had a similar vibe. I went with a classic navy blue – figured it would go with everything.

The Sewing Process (aka the Struggle)

Cutting the fabric was surprisingly tricky. I used a rotary cutter and a big ruler, but my lines were still a little wonky. Note to self: invest in better cutting tools.

Next up: sewing! I dusted off my old sewing machine (it’s been a while!). I started with the side seams, and that went… okay. Straight lines are my friend. But then came the bottom, which is kind of a boxy shape. That was a whole other level of challenging. I had to pin it like crazy, and I definitely ripped out a few seams before I got it right (or at least, right-ish).

  • Pin, pin, pin! Seriously, use more pins than you think you need.
  • Go slow. Especially around those corners.
  • Don’t be afraid to rip out seams and start over. It happens to the best of us (or at least, to me).

The handles were another adventure. I used some webbing material, which was super easy to work with. But attaching them to the bag? That took some serious maneuvering. I had to make sure they were evenly spaced and, you know, actually attached securely. No one wants a handle popping off mid-grocery run.

The Finished Product

After a few evenings of wrestling with my sewing machine, I finally had a finished tote! It’s definitely not perfect. The seams are a little…rustic, and the shape isn’t exactly like the State bag. But you know what? I made it! And it’s actually pretty darn cute. I’ve already used it for a trip to the park, and it held everything I needed. Plus, I got that “I made this!” bragging rights, which is always a good feeling.

Would I do it again? Maybe. It was definitely a learning experience. But next time, I might try a simpler tote bag pattern first. Baby steps, people, baby steps.
