Okay, so yesterday I decided to finally tackle that junk pile in my backyard. You know, the one with the rusty old bike frames and random metal bits? I’d heard about this place, Grim Cycle Salvage in Orem, Utah, and figured it was worth a shot. I mean, what else was I going to do with all that scrap?

First, I gathered everything up. This was the worst part, honestly. Spiders, rusty nails, you name it. I wore some thick gloves and loaded everything into the back of my truck. It was a tight fit, but I managed.

Then I drove over to Grim Cycle Salvage. It’s kind of tucked away, but my GPS found it no problem. When I got there, it was pretty much what I expected: a big yard with piles of, well, salvaged cycles and parts. I pulled in and parked.

The Sorting Process

Some guy came out, and he was super chill. He helped me unload the stuff and started sorting through it. I guess they separate everything by metal type. He was tossing things into different bins – aluminum here, steel there, and so on.

I was curious, so I asked him about some of the older bike frames. He explained that they can sometimes refurbish those or sell them to people who are into vintage bikes. Pretty cool, actually.

  • He separated out a few things.

  • He was looking for steel and aluminum, mostly.

  • He checked whether they’re reusable or recyclable.

Getting Paid

After he sorted everything, he weighed each bin. Then, he did some quick calculations and told me how much they’d pay me. It wasn’t a ton of money, but hey, it was more than I had before, and it was definitely better than letting that stuff rust away in my yard.

He handed me the cash, and that was it! I drove off, feeling pretty good about finally getting rid of that junk and making a little extra money in the process. Overall, it was a super easy and worthwhile experience. If you’ve got a pile of metal scrap, I’d say give Grim Cycle Salvage a try.
