Okay, so I’ve been wrenching on bikes for a while, and the Honda RC51 is a machine I’ve always wanted to get my hands on. It’s a beast, a real icon. Recently, I finally got the chance to work on one, and I wanted to see what kind of power I could get out of it. So this whole thing started with me just looking to boost the “hp” – the horsepower.
Getting Started
First things first, I got the bike up on the stand. Needed a good, solid look at everything. Checked the basics – air filter, spark plugs, fuel lines. Everything looked pretty good, which was a relief, this bike was well looked after. I wanted a baseline, you know? See what kind of power it was making before I started messing with things.
The Deep Dive
I spent a good few hours just going over the engine. I pulled the airbox and checked the throttle bodies – they were spotless, which was awesome. I even popped off the valve covers to have a peek at the cams and valve train. All good there, too.
Then came the fun part. Since this bike was already in good condition, I decided to focus on a few key areas to try and squeeze out some more power:
- Exhaust: The stock exhaust is alright, but I figured there were some gains to be had here.
- Fueling: Needed to make sure the engine was getting the right amount of fuel, especially if I was changing the exhaust.
- Air intake: More air, more fuel, more boom, right?

With the exhaust, it’s not always about making it loud, I just want to reduce restriction so it’s not chocked. To adjust fueling to get the mix of air and fuel right.

It’s been a pretty intense few days, but super rewarding. Seeing those numbers climb, even a little, is a great feeling. The RC51 is a legendary bike, and it’s been an honor to work on one. I’m still tinkering, still learning, and that’s what I love about this whole thing.
