Okay, folks, let’s talk about how to throw a rugby ball. I’m no pro, but I’ve been tossing the ball around with my buddies for a while now, and I’ve picked up a few things along the way. I wanted to share my experiences, so that’s what I did.

My Rugby Throwing Journey
First things first, I grabbed a rugby ball. It felt weird at first, not like a football at all. It’s bigger and has this funky shape. So, my initial throws? Let’s just say they weren’t pretty. They wobbled all over the place, went sideways, and sometimes even backwards! It became my fun practice.
Getting the Grip Right
I realized the grip was key. I started experimenting. I tried holding it like a football, but that just didn’t work. Then, I remembered seeing someone spread their fingers across the seams. So I tried that, and it felt much better. I made sure my fingers were spread out, and my thumb was wrapped around for support.
- Fingers spread wide across the seams.
- Thumb providing support.
- Not squeezing too tight, just a firm hold.
The Throwing Motion
Next up, the actual throw. I tried just using my arm, but that was a disaster. The ball had no power and went nowhere. Then I figured the whole body to be involved.
I started by pointing my non-throwing shoulder towards where I wanted the ball to go. Then, I stepped forward with the opposite foot. As I stepped, I began to rotate my hips and torso. That’s where the power started to come from! I brought my throwing arm back, keeping the ball high, and then whipped it forward, releasing the ball as my arm came over my shoulder. The spinning motion is super important to make it go far and straight, so I really focus on finishing the throw and pulling the ball across my body.
Practice, Practice, Practice
I kept practicing, and things slowly started to improve. My throws became more accurate, and they started to have that nice spiral. It took a lot of repetition, and I still mess up sometimes, but it’s way better than when I first started. I practiced in my backyard, at the park, and whenever I could get a friend to catch. Slowly, it clicked.

My Throwing Now
Now. after practice for some time, it becomes better.
My ball spirals way more consistently, and it has some decent power to it. I am still working on it. It’s all part of game, right?
