My Trip Planning Saga to Indy
Folks always ask, “how long does it take to get to Indianapolis?” Well, let me tell you, I found out the hard way it’s not as simple as punching it into a map app. I had this trip planned for ages, supposed to meet up with some old buddies down there.

So, I started like anyone else. Pulled up the map online, saw the estimated time. Looked pretty straightforward, just a few hours drive from where I am. Thought to myself, easy peasy. I figured I’d leave mid-morning, grab lunch on the way, be there by mid-afternoon. Plenty of time to settle in before meeting the guys.
Here’s where the real “practice” began. The day came, I packed the car, got the coffee going. Felt pretty good about my timing. Hit the road right on schedule. First hour? Smooth sailing. I was thinking, “Man, this is great, might even get there early.”
Then, reality hit. It always does, right?
- First, there was unexpected construction. Like, miles of it. Single lane traffic crawling along. Added a good 45 minutes right there.
- Then, just past that, a sudden downpour. Visibility dropped, everyone slowed way down. Felt like I was barely moving.
- And of course, around lunchtime, everyone else decided to stop too. Gas stations and fast-food places were packed. What I thought would be a quick 20-minute stop turned into almost an hour.
By the time I was actually getting close to Indy, the afternoon rush hour was starting. Seriously. The map app kept adding time. That “few hours” estimate? Completely blown out of the water. I was getting texts from my buddies asking where I was.
The Real Answer
So, when people ask me now how long it takes? I tell them this story. I tell them the map gives you a best guess, a perfect-world scenario. But the real world? It throws stuff at you.
You gotta factor in:
- Time of day you leave (huge difference).
- Day of the week (weekends can be busy too).
- Weather (never underestimate this).
- Construction (it’s always somewhere).
- Your own need for breaks.
I finally rolled into Indy hours later than planned, stressed out and tired. Missed the initial hangout, had to catch up later. It wasn’t the end of the world, but it taught me a lesson. That trip, that actual doing it, was the only way to understand. You can look at all the data you want, but the real time it takes? You only know by hitting the road yourself and seeing what happens.
So yeah, “how long does it take?” It takes as long as it takes on that specific day. Plan for longer than you think you need. That’s my hard-earned advice.
