I’ve been checking out smaller bikes lately because my buddy wants to get into riding. He kept asking about the Ninja 400’s power, so I figured I’d dig into the specs myself.
Starting with Kawasaki’s Official Numbers
Cracked open Kawasaki’s US website first thing this morning. Scrolled through the Ninja 400 specs section real slow – bam! Right there in the engine details: 49 horsepower. Official claim says 399cc parallel twin puts out 49hp at 10,000 rpm. Wrote that down in my notes app.
Then I thought – wait, I rode the 2021 model last summer at that demo event. Felt quicker than my old 300. Dug through my riding gear pocket and found crumpled spec sheets from Kawasaki reps. Yep, same 49hp number printed there too.
Dyno Tests vs Manufacturer Claims
But I know manufacturers sometimes exaggerate. Went down this rabbit hole last year with my Honda. Pulled up three different motorcycle channels that actually dyno-tested the Ninja 400:
- CycleWorld got 42.8 hp at rear wheel
- Motorcyclist Magazine saw 44.1 hp
- Some random YouTuber with decent equipment showed 43.7 hp
All made sense – you always lose some power through the chain and transmission. About 15% drop looks normal.
Comparing Against Other Models
Here’s where it got interesting for me:

- Ninja 300 felt like a toy to me now – that made 39hp when I owned one
- KTM RC390 claims 44hp but tested worse than Ninja on every dyno run
- Even checked the new Z400 – same exact engine, just different body
Printed comparison charts and spread them on my garage workbench. The real shocker was seeing it out-dyno many 500cc bikes! Those charts are still stuck to my toolbox with greasy fingerprints everywhere.
The Weird International Difference
Almost wrapped up when I remembered European models sometimes get restricted. Grabbed coffee and searched UK forums – damn right! EU versions cap at 35kW (47hp) for license reasons. My cousin in Spain confirmed his dealer paperwork showed exactly that.
My shop computer now has fifteen tabs open – Kawasaki sites from five countries, forum threads, YouTube dyno videos. Never thought researching a beginner bike would eat three hours of my day!
So after all this digging? Stock US Ninja 400 makes 49 official horsepower but gives about 44 at the wheel. Enough to surprise bigger bikes but still perfect for new riders. Told my buddy he should test ride one this weekend – if he doesn’t chicken out!
