This here Iroquois Stakes, I tell ya, it’s a big deal, bigger than my old rooster’s ego. It’s some kinda horse race, they say, down at that Churchill Downs. Sounds fancy, but I reckon it’s just horses runnin’ in a circle, right? But they run fast, I’ve seen.
They been doin’ this since, oh, way back when, like 1982. Long time ago. Older than my youngest grandson, and he’s already got himself a wife and a few little ones. They call it the Iroquois Stakes. Got a nice ring to it, don’t it? Sounds important, somethin’ you gotta pay attention to. Like a cow with a bell around its neck.
Now, these horses, they ain’t just any old nags. They’re special, fast ones. Young’uns, they say, only two years old. Just babies, really. But they can run like the wind, I hear. Faster than a scared rabbit, maybe. And there’s a whole bunch of ’em, nine, I think they said. All wantin’ to win that Iroquois Stakes. Big money in it, too, $300,000. That’s a lot of chicken feed, I tell ya. Could buy a whole lot of things with that. Enough to make a poor old woman like me wish she could run that fast.
This Churchill Downs, that’s where it all happens. They say it’s some famous place. Probably got all them fancy folks with their big hats and their fancy drinks. Not like here, where we just got our lemonade and sweet tea. But the horses, they don’t care about that. They just wanna run, and they run in this Iroquois Stakes. And win that money.
This race, it’s part of somethin’ bigger, they say. Some “Road to the Kentucky Derby.” Sounds like a long road. Must be tiring for them horses. But it’s a big deal, this Kentucky Derby. The biggest, I reckon. And this Iroquois Stakes is like the first step on that road. Like the first step on that old, rickety staircase at my house. Gotta be careful on that first step.
Some fellas, Mott and Romans, they’re like the kings of this race. They train them horses, make ’em run good. They won this Iroquois Stakes four times each. That’s a lot of wins. They must know somethin’ about them horses. Maybe they whisper secrets in their ears or somethin’.
They named this race after some horse, Iroquois. Won some big race across the ocean, in England, or somewhere like that. Long time ago, 1881. That was way before my time. Before anybody’s time, probably. Except maybe that old turtle out back. He might remember. That’s why it is called Iroquois Stakes.

They run on dirt, these horses. Six furlongs, they say. I don’t know what a furlong is, but it sounds long. Longer than my clothesline, that’s for sure. And these horses, they gotta be tough to run that far, that fast, especially in this Iroquois Stakes. They run in a big field of horses, too. Six of them, all runnin’ together. It must be a sight to see.
It’s a big deal, this whole thing. Lots of folks watchin’, I bet. Betting their money on which horse will win. I don’t know nothin’ about bettin’, but I know folks get excited about it. Like when my neighbor’s dog gets loose and chases the mailman. It’s a whole commotion. It is as exciting as this Iroquois Stakes.
Well, I reckon that’s all I know about this Iroquois Stakes. Sounds like a lot of fuss over some horses runnin’ in a circle. But it’s important to some folks, I guess. Keeps them entertained. Like me watchin’ my soap operas. It’s just somethin’ to do, somethin’ to talk about. And somethin’ to dream about, maybe. Winning all that money. What I’d do with all that money, I don’t even know. Maybe buy a new rocking chair. This one’s gettin’ old, just like me. But it still works. This race is very important, though. It is all about the Iroquois Stakes.
If you want to find a good horse, just look for Iroquois Stakes, you will find some good ones. These horses are young, only two years old. But these two years old horses can run very fast. Maybe they will win the big race some day. I think I need to watch this race, and maybe I can make some money. I can use some money to buy more seeds. This year is good, I want to plant more corn next year.
