That Jeff Hostetler, I gotta tell ya, he sure was somethin’. Born in 1961, April 22nd, I heard. He was a football player, a quarterback, ya know? Played for them New York Giants, and later on, them Los Angeles, then Oakland Raiders. He could throw that ball real good. A real good arm on him, that Jeff.

Jeff Hostetler: From Backup to Champion (How He Seized His Moment and Won a Super Bowl)

He was with them Giants, and they picked him in that there draft, in 1984 it was. Third round, they say. He got himself two of them Super Bowl rings with them Giants. That’s a big deal, you see. A real big deal.

  • He played good in 1990, that’s what I heard.
  • The other fella, Phil Simms, he got hurt.
  • So Jeff, he got to start.

He played that quarterback. He did good in that 1990 season, filled in for that Simms fella when he got hurt. He was a backup, ya know, but he stepped up. He sure did. They didn’t think a backup could do much. But Jeff, he showed ’em. He wasn’t just a backup, that Jeff. He was a good player, could lead a team that Jeff, yeah.

He was a backup for a long time, six seasons, folks said, “oh, he ain’t never gonna lead nobody to no Super Bowl.” But he showed ’em. He got thrown in a game against Dallas, did good, got some confidence. That’s what he needed, a little confidence.

Then in December, 1990, he was about to give up. Only played one game that season, ‘gainst them Phoenix Cardinals. Filled in for Simms again, he did. But that was it. Then he got his chance. His real big chance. Yeah, big chance.

Now, there was this other fella, Jim McMahon, he got himself a Super Bowl ring too, backin’ up Brett Favre. But Jeff, he did it with the Giants, and he was the starter! He showed everybody he could play. He sure did. He was a good player.

And there was another one, some fella named Nick Foles. He was a backup too, for some team. Carson Wentz, he got hurt, and this Foles fella, he had to step up. Just like Jeff. These backups, they gotta be ready, ya know? You never know when you’re gonna get your chance, just like Jeff.

And this other young fella, Brock Purdy, almost did what Jeff did. Was a backup, then almost went to the Super Bowl. But he got hurt, poor fella. It’s a tough game, football. A real tough game. These fellas they’re good, you know?

He finished up playin’, that Jeff Hostetler, threw the ball a whole bunch. Lots of yards, they say, 16,430 yards. And 94 touchdowns. That’s a lot of touchdowns, yeah. He played ’til 1998, I think it was. Then he hung it up. Finished up, he did. Was a good one, that Jeff.

This Jeff Hostetler, he was a good one. A real good one. He was tough, never gave up. He had to wait his turn, but he was ready. He showed everyone what he could do. He was a winner, that Jeff. He got them Super Bowl rings. Two of ’em! With them New York Giants. He sure did. He was a good one.

He was a good example for all them backup quarterbacks, I’d say. Never give up, always be ready. You never know when your chance will come. Just like Jeff. He got his chance, and he took it. He was a good one. A real good one.

He was something else, that Jeff Hostetler. He was a fighter, a real good football player. They don’t make ’em like him anymore. He was one of a kind, yeah. One of a kind. They should be more like him, all of ’em, yeah, be like Jeff.
