Getting Sidetracked by Golf Commentary

So, I was flipping channels the other day, you know, just trying to unwind a bit. Landed on some golf, which I don’t watch religiously, but sometimes it’s just calming background noise. Anyway, this commentator, Jerry Foltz, was on. I recognized the voice, heard him before.

Then later, I stumbled across something online, maybe an article or a podcast bit, I forget exactly. It was his partner, Karen Stupples, talking. She mentioned something funny about their garden. Apparently, they’d travel, and the person supposed to look after the place just… didn’t. So they kinda had to get into turf management themselves out of necessity. It made me chuckle because, boy, do I know that feeling.

My Own Yard Saga

It reminded me of last spring. I had this trip planned, just for a week. I asked my neighbor’s kid, seemed responsible enough, to just mow the lawn once while I was gone. Simple, right? Wrong.

I left him cash, clear instructions, the whole deal. Came back, and the lawn looked like a jungle. Seriously. Weeds everywhere, grass knee-high. Kid apparently “forgot.” Just completely spaced it. So there I was, jet-lagged and annoyed, having to spend my first day back wrestling with the mower and feeling itchy from all the clippings.

  • First, the mower wouldn’t start. Old thing.
  • Then, I ran over a hidden sprinkler head. Oops.
  • Finally got it done, but it took hours.

It’s just one of those things, isn’t it? You try to delegate, try to make life easier, and sometimes it just backfires spectacularly. You end up doing it yourself anyway, probably grumbling the whole time.

Back to Foltz

So, hearing that story about Foltz and Stupples, it was just relatable. Makes you realize these folks on TV, they deal with the same mundane headaches. It’s not all glamour and fancy golf courses. Sometimes it’s just trying to keep the darn grass alive.

I saw somewhere he lives down in Orlando. Settled there with his wife, Jane, and their son, Jackson. Sounds like a nice, normal life, apart from the travel and commentary gig. Maybe having that home base makes dealing with the unreliable garden help a bit easier. Or maybe they just got really good at mowing. Either way, it was just a funny little slice-of-life thing to hear about.
