Alright, so I decided to give Kempsville Greens Golf Course a shot the other day. Been meaning to check it out, see what the fuss, if any, was about. Just wanted to get out and swing the sticks, you know?

Getting Started
Pulled into the parking lot. Plenty of spots, which was a good start, I guess. Walked over to the clubhouse, or whatever you call the main building there. Inside, it was pretty much what you’d expect. Nothing fancy, but it did the job. The fella behind the counter got me sorted with a tee time. Paid my greens fee, which wasn’t too bad, and grabbed a scorecard.
I didn’t bother with the driving range, if they even have a proper one. Just wanted to get straight onto the course. Made my way to the first tee. Looked around, took a practice swing or two. Felt okay, ready to just hit some balls.
Out on the Course
The first few holes, well, they were golf holes. Nothing really jumped out at me as spectacular, but nothing terrible either. The layout seemed pretty straightforward. I wasn’t expecting Augusta, and I didn’t get it. That’s fine.
I remember one hole on the front nine, maybe the 5th or 6th, had a bit of water that made me think for a second. Dumped one in, naturally. That’s golf, right? Classic me.
The fairways were… passable. I’ve seen worse, I’ve seen better. They were cut, mostly. Some spots were a bit thin, others a bit shaggy. You just play it as it lies. The rough wasn’t too punishing, which was probably a good thing for my game on that particular day.

- Greens were a mixed bag. Some rolled okay, others were a bit bumpy.
- Speed was inconsistent, I thought. Made putting a bit of an adventure.
- Found a few bunkers. The sand was… well, it was sand. Some fluffy, some a bit packed down.
Pace of play wasn’t too bad when I started, but it definitely bunched up a bit on the back nine. Had to wait on a few shots, which always throws off my rhythm, if I ever had one to begin with. Saw a few other groups out there, seemed like your regular crowd of golfers just trying to enjoy a round.
Wrapping Up
Finished up the 18th. My score was what it was. Shook hands with the guys I got paired up with. Nice enough fellas. Didn’t stick around for a beer or anything. Just loaded my clubs into the car and headed off.
So, Kempsville Greens. Yeah, I played it. It’s a golf course. It exists. It serves its purpose if you’re looking for a place to play a round without breaking the bank or expecting a championship experience. It’s a muni, through and through. Would I go back? Maybe. If I was in the area and just had an itch to play, sure. It got the job done. Nothing more, nothing less. That was my day out there.
