So, I decided a while back to let my hair grow out. Didn’t really think it through, just kind of went for it. At the same time, I was getting back into golf pretty seriously. Seemed fine at first, you know? Hair wasn’t that long.

Then it started getting properly long. Like, shoulder-length and beyond. And man, hitting the golf course became a whole different game. My first few rounds were just… chaotic. I’d start my backswing, and bam, hair swinging right across my face. Lost sight of the ball more times than I care to admit. It was seriously annoying.

Figuring It Out

I knew I had to do something. Couldn’t just chop it all off again, I was committed by then. So, the experiments began.

  • Ponytail: Tried the classic ponytail. High ponytail, low ponytail. High one felt weird with a cap, and the low one? On the downswing, that thing would whip around and smack me in the face or neck. Distracting as hell.
  • Bun: Okay, maybe a bun? Tried that. Tucked it all up. Problem was, getting it tight enough so it wouldn’t fall out mid-swing was tough. Plus, wearing a cap over a bun just felt lumpy and awkward. Visor was a bit better, but still not perfect.
  • Headbands: Bought a couple of those sporty headbands. Kept the hair off my forehead, yeah, but the longer bits still flew around. And honestly, I just felt kinda goofy wearing one. Plus, they’d slip when I started sweating.
  • Braids: Someone suggested braids. Look, I’m trying to get ready for a round of golf, not audition for a medieval movie. Too much effort, seriously.

What Actually Worked (Sort Of)

After messing around for weeks, I kinda landed on a system. It’s not foolproof, but it’s the best I’ve managed.

First step: A really tight, low braid. Not just a ponytail, but braiding it keeps it from whipping around so much. Takes a couple minutes, but worth it.

Second step: A good visor, not a full cap. The visor clamps down over the top part where the braid starts and seems to keep everything more secure than a cap. Allows the braid to hang down the back without interfering too much.

It’s still a pain sometimes, especially on windy days. You see some pros out there rocking long hair, guys and gals, and they make it look effortless. Trust me, it takes some getting used to. You gotta find what works for you, your hair type, your swing. It’s just another one of those little things in golf you don’t think about until you’re standing over the ball, squinting through a curtain of your own hair.
