Alright, so I heard the buzz about a new Pokémon game coming out. You know how it is, gets you a bit excited, thinking back to the old days. Didn’t jump on the pre-order wagon immediately, though. I like to wait and see, maybe check if the servers crash on day one, haha.

Getting Ready

Anyway, the release day crept closer. Decided, okay, let’s do this. Didn’t want the hassle of going to a store, lining up. So, digital it was. Made sure my Switch had space, cleared out some old demos I never touched again. Plugged it in the night before, made sure the battery was full. Nothing worse than starting a new game and the low battery warning pops up an hour in.

Launch Day Download

Release day came. Woke up, grabbed my coffee, and turned on the Switch. Went straight to the eShop. Found the game, hit purchase. The download started. It wasn’t super fast, my internet’s just okay, but it got there. Seeing that little icon pop up on the home screen felt pretty good, like unwrapping a gift.

First Steps Inside

Finally, tapped the icon. The intro music started up, always a nice moment. Went through the usual setup – professor talking, choosing my character look. Spent maybe a bit too long on the hair, gotta look decent, right? Then came the big choice: the starter Pokémon. Always a tough one. I went with the water type this time, just had a good feeling about it.

Got my first few Poké Balls, stepped outside into the starting town. Looked around a bit. The graphics seemed alright, pretty standard stuff for the Switch nowadays. Felt familiar, which is good and bad I guess. Took those first steps into the tall grass, heart beating a little faster. Waiting for that first wild Pokémon encounter.

Playing Through

The first battle popped up. Just a little guy, easy catch. Felt good to see that “Gotcha!” message. Spent the next few hours just wandering. Here’s what I basically did:

  • Caught a bunch of the early route Pokémon. Tried to get a mix of types.
  • Battled a few trainers hanging around. Easy wins mostly, good for leveling up my starter.
  • Checked out the first town’s Poké Mart and Center. Stocked up on Potions.
  • Just generally explored the first couple of routes, seeing what was different, what felt the same.

Honestly, it felt comfortable. Like putting on an old pair of shoes. Didn’t run into anything super surprising right away, but the core loop of catching and battling is still there, still kinda satisfying.

Current Thoughts

I’ve put maybe ten hours in now? Just beat the first gym leader. It wasn’t too hard, my water starter handled it okay. The game’s fine. It does what Pokémon games do. Haven’t seen anything revolutionary yet, but it’s a solid time waster. Good for turning your brain off for a bit after work. I’ll keep playing, see what the rest of the region has to offer. Maybe it’ll surprise me later on. For now, it’s just… more Pokémon. And sometimes, that’s all you need.
