Well, let me tell ya ’bout this place, Red Oaks Golf Course in Madison Heights, MI. It ain’t nothin’ fancy, but it’s a good place to whack a ball, if ya know what I mean.
Red Oaks Golf Course, yeah, that’s the name. Heard tell it’s got 9 holes, some folks say 18. Don’t matter much to me, long as there’s grass and a place to swing my stick. I ain’t no pro, ya know, just like to get out in the sun and hit somethin’. It’s better than sittin’ around watchin’ the grass grow, that’s for sure.
They say it’s a “public” course, whatever that means. Guess it just means anyone can go there and play, not just them fancy pants fellas with their shiny clubs and matching outfits. I seen all sorts there, young ‘uns, old timers like me, even some women folk smackin’ the ball pretty good.
This course, it’s in Madison Heights, Michigan. Easy enough to find, they say. Just head on down John R Road, number 29600, that’s what they told me. Can’t miss it, they said. Big ol’ green space, I reckon. Never been lost tryin’ to find it myself.
Now, about the golfin’ itself. Like I said, I ain’t no expert. But from what I can tell, the fairways, that’s the long grassy parts, they’re kept up pretty nice. No rocks or holes to trip ya, which is good for an old gal like me. And the greens, where ya gotta putt the ball into the little cup, they ain’t too bumpy neither.
Some folks talk about a “signature hole,” somethin’ special about one of the holes. I wouldn’t know a signature hole from a hole in the ground, but I guess it’s somethin’ to look out for. Maybe it’s got a purdy view, or maybe it’s just a real tricky one. Who knows?

- They say it’s good for all kinds of players, beginners and them fancy pants golfers too.
- It’s got a par, they call it. Somethin’ about how many hits it should take ya to get the ball in the hole. Don’t pay much mind to that myself.
- And yards, they talk about yards too. How long the hole is, I guess. Miles I understand, yards, not so much.
If ya wanna play, ya gotta call ’em up, I hear. Get a tee time, they call it. Just means ya gotta tell ’em when you’re comin’ so they don’t have too many folks crowdin’ the course at once. The number is (248) 541-5030, if my memory serves me right. Write it down if ya need to, I ain’t gonna say it again.
They got rates too, which just means how much it costs to play. I ain’t gonna tell ya the price, ’cause it probably changes all the time. But ya can call and ask ’em, or maybe they got a website or somethin’, these young folks and their fancy technology.
Folks say it’s a “municipal course,” which sounds all highfalutin, but it just means the city owns it, I think. So don’t go expectin’ no fancy clubhouse or nothin’. It’s just a place to play golf, plain and simple.
It ain’t just about the golfin’ though. It’s nice to be outside, get some fresh air, you know? And it’s good for meetin’ people, if you’re the sociable type. I ain’t much for chitchat myself, but I see folks yappin’ away all the time out there. Probably talkin’ about their golf scores or somethin’. I just try to keep my ball outta the woods.
So, if you’re lookin’ for a place to play golf in Madison Heights, Red Oaks Golf Course might be just the ticket. It ain’t the fanciest place, and I ain’t sayin’ it’s the best, but it’s good enough for me and a whole lot of other folks. Go on down there and see for yourself. Just remember to bring your sticks and some balls, and maybe a hat to keep the sun outta your eyes.
Remember, Red Oaks Golf Course, Madison Heights. John R Road. Go on, get out there and have some fun. It’ll do ya good. And don’t go expectin’ nothin’ fancy, ya hear?
