Okay, so today I decided to mess around with some Formula 1 driver data, specifically Oscar Piastri and Charles Leclerc. I’ve been seeing a lot of comparisons between them online, and I wanted to dig into some stats myself.

First, I started by just gathering data. I figured I needed a good source, so I hit up a few racing websites. It was a bit of a pain, honestly. Some sites had tons of info on one driver but not the other. It took a little while to find places that had consistent stats for both Piastri and Leclerc.
Once I felt like I had enough raw data, I dumped everything into a spreadsheet. Yeah, I know, pretty basic, but it works! I made separate columns for things like race results, qualifying positions, points finishes, fastest laps – all that good stuff. I also included a column for the year and the specific race, just to keep everything organized.
After that, I started playing around with the data. I was mostly just eyeballing it at first, looking for any obvious trends. I compared their average finishing positions, how often they DNF’d, that sort of thing. It was interesting to see it laid out in front of me. I could see which races each driver performed really well on, and where they struggled.
Some Basic Comparisons
- Averaging: I calculated some simple averages, like their average finishing position over the past couple of seasons.
- Head-to-Head: I checked how often one driver finished ahead of the other in the same races.
- Consistency:I created some makeshift consistency score.
The spreadsheet helped me see some simple comparisons, but the real intresting stuff will need more work.
So, that’s pretty much where I left off. It was a fun little afternoon project. I feel like I have a slightly better understanding of how Piastri and Leclerc stack up, at least based on the basic stats. I defintely need to spend more time doing a deep-dive, maybe I’ll make some graphs next.
