Digging into Sandy Hawley, the Jockey
Okay, so I was down a bit of a rabbit hole recently, looking up old horse racing stuff. Just clicking around, you know? And this name, Sandy Hawley, kept showing up. Canadian guy. Honestly, didn’t know much about him beforehand, which feels kinda dumb now given what I found out. Decided to spend some time actually looking into his story.

My first step was just basic searching. You know, ‘Sandy Hawley jockey wins’. Standard stuff. Right off the bat, it was clear he wasn’t just some average rider. The sheer number of wins mentioned was wild. Like, seriously high numbers.
So I kept reading. Found out he nailed the Queen’s Plate a few times. Big deal in Canada, apparently. And the awards…
- He got that Eclipse Award thing twice. Once as the top apprentice, like the best rookie, and then later as the overall top jockey in North America. That’s pretty cool, shows he started strong and stayed dominant.
- Saw mentions of him being the first jockey to win 500 races in a single year. Five hundred in one year! That’s insane workload when you think about it.
- The career total, over 6,000 wins. Just hard to wrap my head around riding that many races, let alone winning that often.
What really stuck with me though, was reading about a really nasty fall he had in ’78. Sounded life-threatening, broke a ton of stuff. Doctors apparently weren’t sure he’d even walk right again, forget riding. But the guy fought back and got back in the saddle. That resilience, you know? More impressive than just the wins sometimes. It adds a layer to the whole legend thing.
Anyway, that was my little journey finding out about Sandy Hawley. Started from almost zero knowledge and ended up pretty impressed. A true giant in racing, especially for Canada. Glad I took the time to look him up instead of just clicking past his name again. Makes you wonder who else is out there with amazing stories you just haven’t stumbled on yet.
