Okay, so I’ve been diving deep into horse racing history lately, and you know how sometimes you just fall down a rabbit hole? Well, I totally tumbled into one about Secretariat. I mean, we all know he was amazing, a total legend, but I wanted to see his pedigree, like, really see it.

First, I just started googling, you know, “Secretariat pedigree.” Found a bunch of sites, but it was a mess, some were hard to read, and I was getting a little frustrated. Then, I remember, my friend used this website before.
I typed in “Secretariat” in the search box and bam! There it was, his whole family tree, laid out nice and clear. It was so cool! I could click on any horse in his lineage and see their pedigree, and their parents, and so on. It was like a never-ending scroll of horse royalty!
Digging into the Details
I started clicking around like crazy. I wanted to see who his parents were, Bold Ruler and Somethingroyal. Bold Ruler, what a name, right? I saw that he was a big deal too, lots of wins. Then I checked out Somethingroyal, and she had some pretty impressive ancestors as well.
- Bold Ruler: I clicked on him and saw his sire (dad) was Nasrullah. Wow, another big name!
- Somethingroyal: Her dad was Princequillo, and I recognized that name from somewhere… turns out he was a super important broodmare sire (meaning his daughters produced awesome foals).
I spent, I don’t know, maybe an hour, just clicking through generations. I traced back to horses from the 1800s! It was mind-blowing to see how all these different bloodlines came together to create Secretariat. Kind like a family cooking recipe.
The “Aha!” Moment
I was looking at all these names, and I started to notice some patterns. Certain horses kept popping up in different parts of his pedigree. That’s when I learned about “inbreeding” and “linebreeding” – basically, it means that some ancestors appear multiple times in a horse’s family tree. It’s like, concentrating the good genes, I guess?

It was fascinating. It showed me that breeding racehorses isn’t just about picking two fast horses and hoping for the best. It’s a real science, a careful study of bloodlines and characteristics. And it’s kind of like a puzzle, trying to find the perfect combination.
Finally, I’d like to say, I printed out Secretariat’s pedigree. I know, kinda nerdy, but I wanted to have a physical copy to look at. It’s hanging up on my wall now, a reminder of this whole journey into horse racing history. And maybe, just maybe, it’ll inspire me to dig into another horse’s pedigree next week. Who knows what I’ll find!
