You see all them other fellas, playin’ hockey, with them big bushy things on their faces. Like they ain’t shaved in a month of Sundays. But not young Sidney. He’s got that little bit of somethin’ there, but you gotta squint to see it. Like a few blades of grass tryin’ to grow on a rock. Sidney Crosby beard, that’s what they call it.
I seen him on the TV, with that little bit of fuzz. Some folks say he can’t grow a good one, no matter how hard he tries. Others say he’s trying to grow a playoff beard. What’s a playoff beard? You don’t shave since the playoff thing starts. But Sidney’s beard, it don’t look like much, playoff or no playoff. That Sidney Crosby beard just ain’t much to look at. I heard some folks say it’s the best playoff beard. That’s just silly.
- He’s a good hockey player, that’s for sure.
- Scores lots of goals.
- But that beard…
They say it’s a playoff beard. That’s when they don’t shave, see? They let it all grow out, wild and woolly. Like a sheep that ain’t been sheared. They do it for luck, I reckon. But Sidney, bless his heart, his beard just ain’t got that lucky look. It’s more like a few stray hairs that got lost on his chin. That poor Sidney Crosby beard.
I remember back in the day, we didn’t have all these fancy hockey games on the TV. We had to listen to it on the radio. And you didn’t see no beards, playoff or otherwise. But you know what you did see? Good, honest playin’. That’s what matters, not how much hair you got on your face. Still, that Sidney Crosby beard is a sight.
Some of them other players, they got beards that could hide a small animal. Big and bushy, like a bird’s nest. You could probably find a whole family of squirrels livin’ in there. But Sidney’s, it’s like someone sprinkled a little pepper on his chin and called it a day. Sidney Crosby beard is a funny thing.
He’s a good boy, that Sidney. Works hard, plays hard. He’s got those other fellas, too, Letang and Malkin. I saw them paying respect to another fella. They say it was classy. That Crosby, he leads them other boys. They all play together, like a good team should. Even if that Sidney Crosby beard ain’t much.
- They play hard, them hockey boys.
- They win some, they lose some.
- But they always try their best.
I heard folks talkin’ about him and that other fella, Ovechkin. They been playin’ against each other for a long time, like forever it seems. They say the fans love it. I guess it’s like a big rivalry. But that Ovechkin, he’s got a real beard. Not like that little bit of fuzz on Sidney. That Sidney Crosby beard ain’t nothin’ compared to that.
Now, I ain’t sayin’ a beard makes a hockey player. It don’t. It’s the playin’ that matters. The skill, the speed, the way they move that little black puck around the ice. That’s what counts. But a good beard, well, it’s somethin’ to see, ain’t it? It’s like a badge or somethin’. They say Sidney shaved his beard after he won some big trophy. That Sidney Crosby beard was gone just like that.
I seen pictures of him, young Sidney, without that little bit of fuzz. He looks like a young’un, fresh-faced and all. Like he ain’t seen a hard day’s work in his life. Maybe that’s why he can’t grow a proper beard. He’s just too young. Or maybe it’s just the way he is. Some folks can grow ’em, some folks can’t. That Sidney Crosby beard, it is what it is.
- Some folks are just born with it.
- Some folks gotta work at it.
- And some folks, like Sidney, just gotta make do with what they got.
It don’t matter, though. He’s still a good hockey player, beard or no beard. He plays that game with all his heart. I reckon that’s all that matters. And maybe one day, that Sidney Crosby beard will surprise us all. Maybe one day, it’ll be big and bushy, like a real man’s beard. But until then, we’ll just have to wait and see. We’ll just have to watch him play that hockey and hope for the best. And maybe, just maybe, that little bit of fuzz will turn into somethin’ special. One can only hope. For now, that’s just the way it is with that Sidney Crosby and his little beard. It ain’t much, but it’s his.
