Alright, so I’ve been messing around with Starfield lately, and let me tell you, the whole “New Game Plus” thing has been a real head-scratcher. I mean, you finish the main story, and then boom, you’re given a choice: start the whole thing over again, or skip it entirely. Sounds simple, right? Wrong.

So, at first, I thought, “Why on earth would I want to replay the same story I just finished?” That was my initial reaction. Like, I just spent hours doing all those quests, meeting all those characters, and now I gotta do it all over again? No thanks, I thought I’d skip it.
But then I started poking around online, reading what other players were saying. And that’s when things got interesting. Turns out, if you decide to replay the main quest, it’s not exactly the same. You carry over knowledge from your first playthrough, and that changes things up a bit. I saw someone mention “new twists” in the story because of this. I was intrigued. There are even some minimal variations for each NG+, according to some.
So, I decided to give it a shot. I started a New Game Plus and chose to repeat the main quest. And you know what? They were right. It’s not a completely different story, but there are enough changes to keep it fresh. Plus, you feel kinda powerful going in with all your gear and knowledge from before. I am still exploring it.
Now, I did notice some folks saying that the main story in Starfield isn’t as central to the game as it is in other games. And yeah, I can see that. There’s a ton of other stuff to do, like building ships and outposts, and other side quests, which are pretty cool. So, skipping the main quest altogether is definitely an option. I haven’t tried it yet, but maybe I will on my next playthrough.
Here’s what I’ve gathered so far:

- Repeating the Main Quest: It’s the same basic story, but with some changes based on your previous knowledge. You also get to keep your gear and skills, which is a nice bonus.
- Skipping the Main Quest: You jump straight into the universe with your Starborn powers and gear. You can focus on side quests, exploration, building, or whatever else you want.
Honestly, I’m still not sure which option is “better.” It really depends on what you’re looking for. If you want to experience the story again with a new perspective, repeat it. If you’re more interested in just messing around in the sandbox, skip it. Either way, Starfield’s New Game Plus is a pretty cool feature, even if it did leave me scratching my head at first.
My conclusion for now
If you’re on the fence, maybe try repeating the main quest first, like I did. See how you like the changes. You can always skip it on your next run if you get bored. But hey, that’s just my two cents. I’d love to hear what you guys think, so let me know in the comments!
