So, I’m sitting here, still reeling from what I can only describe as a major letdown at the 2024 Kentucky Derby. I mean, I went in with high hopes, like always. This year, it was all about Fierceness for me. I don’t know, maybe I got caught up in the hype, but with those 5-2 odds, I thought, “This is the one.”

I got all prepped for the big day. It’s a tradition for me, you know? The first Saturday in May, it’s all about the Derby. I read up on all the horses. Just Steel, Forever Young, T O Password – they all sounded so promising. The odds were all over the place, from 20-1 to 30-1. It’s part of the fun, trying to figure out who’s got the best shot.
I followed all the lead-up races, too. The Louisiana Derby, the Jeff Ruby Steaks – I was glued to the screen, trying to get a feel for how the horses were performing. You know, trying to be smart about it, not just picking a name I liked. I made a trip to Kentucky in person to see the race, but I was disappointed because it didn’t go well.
Race day comes, and I’m excited. It is the 150th run. I’m all in on Fierceness. I even read that it was bred in Kentucky, and I thought, “Well, that’s got to count for something, right?” The atmosphere at Churchill Downs was electric, as always. It’s something you’ve got to experience at least once. “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports” – they’re not kidding.
But then, the race starts, and… well, it just didn’t happen for Fierceness. Or for me. It was a tough one to watch. All that anticipation, all that excitement, and it just kind of fizzled out. It wasn’t even close, and I’m not going to lie, it was a real bummer. I am sad about this race.
I know, I know, that’s horse racing for you. It’s unpredictable. That’s part of what makes it so exciting, I guess. But still, it’s hard not to feel disappointed when your horse doesn’t even come close. It’s like, “Come on, at least make it interesting!”

So, yeah, the 2024 Kentucky Derby was a letdown for me. But hey, there’s always next year, right? I’ll be back, ready to try my luck again. Maybe I’ll pick a different horse, maybe I’ll stick with Fierceness – who knows? That’s part of the fun. But for now, I’m just going to sit here and think about what could have been.
Anyway, that’s my story. It wasn’t the outcome I was hoping for, but it’s still a day I’ll remember. The Kentucky Derby, man, it’s something else. You win some, you lose some, I guess. But you always come back for more.
