So, I bumped into this thing called “vom wafer” the other day, and I was like, “What the heck is that?” I’m always up for trying new stuff, so I decided to give it a shot. Honestly, I had zero clue what to expect.
Getting Started
First, I googled it, just to get a basic idea. Turns out, it’s something to do with semiconductor manufacturing, like the guts of our phones and computers. Okay, cool, but I’m no engineer, so that didn’t tell me much about what I could do with it.
I kept digging, and I found some forums where people were talking about using them for… art? Seriously, people were etching designs onto these things and making all sorts of crazy stuff. That sounded way more interesting than reading technical specs.
The Experiment
I managed to get my hands on a few of these “wafers”. They’re super thin and shiny, kinda like a really delicate CD. Don’t even think about bending them, they snap so easily. Learned that the hard way!
I thought about what to do with it. No fancy equipment here, so I went with the simplest approach. I grabbed a permanent marker and just started doodling.
- First Try: Total mess. The marker bled like crazy, and the lines were all fuzzy.
- Second Try: I used a finer-tipped marker, and that helped a bit. Still not great, though.
- Third Try: I found a super-fine-point permanent marker, the kind you use for writing on CDs(show my age). That did the trick! I was able to draw some pretty detailed stuff.
The Result
It is not perfect, but it is look good. I just drew some simple geometric patterns, but it turned out way cooler than I expected. The way the light reflects off the wafer gives it this almost holographic effect.
I’m thinking about trying some other techniques, like maybe using some kind of etching cream or even a laser pointer (if I can figure out how to do that safely). This could be a fun new hobby! Who knew something so technical could be so… artsy?
