So, I finally made it out to the Omega Dubai Desert Classic. I’d been thinking about it for a while, and this year, I just decided, right, let’s go see what all the fuss is about. My plan was just to soak it all in, really get a feel for a big golf tournament up close.

Getting myself there was the first step. Bought my ticket online, which was easy enough. Then on the day, I drove over to the Emirates Golf Club. Parking was a bit of a walk, but not too bad, honestly. The queue to get in moved pretty quick, and before I knew it, I was through the gates. The weather was looking good, which is always a bonus in Dubai – sunny, but with a bit of a breeze.

Out on the Course

First thing I did was grab one of those daily pairing sheets and a course map. You sort of need those to figure out who’s where and what’s going on. The place is huge, much bigger than it looks on TV. The greens were immaculate, like a green carpet, seriously impressive stuff. I just started walking, trying to get a feel for the layout, see a few different holes.

I decided to follow one of the earlier groups for a bit. It’s pretty cool to walk along with the players, just a few feet away sometimes. You really hear the thwack of the ball, and see the spin they get. Then I’d pick a spot by a green and watch a few groups come through. It’s interesting to see how different players tackle the same shot. Some guys are super aggressive, others more cautious.

The atmosphere was pretty good. A decent crowd, but not so packed that you couldn’t move around. Lots of people just enjoying the day, families too. I saw a few familiar faces from the TV, which is always a bit of a novelty. They’re so focused, it’s incredible. You could be right there, and they’re just in their own world, planning their next shot.

I made sure to walk a big loop of the course. Stopped by the 18th green for a while, which is always a classic spot. Saw some amazing shots, and yeah, a few duffs as well – makes them seem a bit more human, you know? The Majlis course is beautiful, no doubt about it. The views, the layout, it’s all top-notch.

At one point, I found a good spot near the practice range. Spent a bit of time there just watching them warm up. The precision is just unreal. Every swing looks so effortless, but you know the amount of work that goes into it.

  • Walked a ton – my feet were definitely feeling it by mid-afternoon.
  • Grabbed some food from one of the stalls. Standard event grub, but hit the spot.
  • Drank a lot of water. You have to, out in that sun.

Later in the afternoon, the crowds got a bit bigger, especially around the leaders. The buzz definitely picked up. I tried to catch some of the action on the back nine as things were getting interesting. It’s fun to be part of that shared excitement when someone sinks a long putt or hits a great approach shot.

By the end of the day, I was pretty tired but glad I went. It’s a completely different experience seeing golf live compared to watching it on TV. You get a much better sense of the undulations of the course, the difficulty of the shots, and just the overall scale of the event. Definitely something I’d do again. It’s a great day out, even if you’re not a die-hard golf fanatic. Just seeing these athletes perform at that level is pretty special.
