Okay, so, the other day I was watching some basketball highlights and this new player, Victor Wembanyama, kept coming up. I’d heard the name before but never really paid attention to how to say it. It looked kinda tricky, to be honest.

So, I started my little research project. First, I just typed “Wembanyama pronunciation” into the search bar, you know, the usual. I found a bunch of articles about how he played half a game with his name spelled wrong on his jersey. Imagine that! They spelled it “Wembanyama” with an “N” instead of an “M” at first.
Anyway, I ignored that stuff for now and looked for actual pronunciation guides. I saw a few videos where someone named Julien was teaching how to say it, but I wanted more than just one source.
Different Pronunciations
Then, I stumbled upon some websites that had audio pronunciations. One of them had like five different audio clips. I listened to them all but they didn’t help me that much. Then I found one with just one audio pronunciation, but still felt uncertain.
- I listened to a bunch of audio clips.
- I still wasn’t 100% sure how to say it right.
Then I found some text explanations. One said to pronounce it “wem-ben-YAH-muh” and another said “Wem-bahn-yah-muh”. NBA had not said anything about it yet. The formal way to say it seemed to be “Wem-bahn-yah-muh” though.
Final Result
After all that, I think I finally got it. It’s “Wem-bahn-yah-muh”. It was a bit of a journey, but now I can say this guy’s name without feeling like I’m butchering it. I still practice it sometimes to be sure though.

So, that’s my little story about figuring out how to say Wembanyama. Hope it helped someone else out there who was also wondering!
