So, the other day I decided to check out this place called West Woods Golf Club. I’d heard some good things about it, and being in Arvada, Colorado, it wasn’t too far of a drive for me. I packed up my clubs, grabbed a buddy, and we hit the road.

First thing we did was find the place. It’s located at 6655 Quaker St, which was easy enough to find with GPS. We pulled in and the first thing I noticed was how well-kept everything looked. I mean, this place is huge! They’ve got these three nine-hole courses, and they mix and match them to make different 18-hole combinations every day. Pretty cool idea, right?
We decided to warm up a bit before tackling the course. They have this practice area. I’m no pro, but I like to think I can hold my own on the course. We grabbed some balls and I started with my irons, focusing on getting a nice, clean swing. My buddy, on the other hand, went straight for the driver. Gotta love his enthusiasm!
After getting loose, we headed to the first tee. I decided to play it safe on the first few holes, just to get a feel for the course. I read somewhere that it’s best to use an iron or a fairway wood off the tee on some of these holes. This one guy, Lynes, said to aim for about 130 yards from the green on hole 23, which is the fifth hole on the Silo course. I think I did okay.
We played the Sleeping Indian/Cottonwood combination, and let me tell you, it was a challenge. The course was designed by Dick and Rick Phelps. These fairways are no joke. You really have to think about your shots. I managed to par a few holes, but there were definitely some bogeys in there, too. My buddy had a bit more trouble, but he still had a blast.
We took a break after nine holes to grab some water and compare scores. The views from the course are amazing, by the way. You can see for miles. We joked about feeling like pros for the day.

The back nine was even tougher, but we were both getting into a groove. I was starting to get a better feel for the greens, and my putting was improving. Still had some rough patches, of course, but that’s golf for you.
By the time we finished, we were both pretty tired, but it was a good tired. We grabbed a bite to eat at the clubhouse. The food was good, and it was nice to relax after a long day on the course.
Overall, I’d say West Woods Golf Club is definitely worth checking out. It’s a great course for all skill levels, the views are amazing, and the staff is friendly. I’ll definitely be back.
