Alright, let’s dive into my “golden blitz may 2024” experiment. It was a wild ride, lemme tell ya!
The Setup: So, the idea was simple: dedicate a solid chunk of time – a blitz, if you will – to revamp my personal project. It was kinda gathering dust, you know? Needed some serious TLC.
Getting Started: First thing I did was list out everything that was bugging me about the project. The UI felt clunky, the data handling was a mess, and some features were just plain broken. I wrote it all down, a proper “to-do” list.
The Blitz Begins: I blocked out a weekend – Friday evening to Sunday night – and told everyone to leave me alone. Pizza was ordered, coffee was brewed, and I was ready to roll.
Friday Night: I started with the UI. It was painful, honestly. Lots of CSS tweaks, moving elements around, and generally trying to make it look less like something from the early 2000s. I managed to get a decent refresh done before calling it a night around 2 AM.
Saturday: Saturday was all about data. I had this awful system of storing data in flat files. I decided to switch to a proper database. Spent most of the day wrestling with migrations and writing new queries. It was tedious, but SO worth it in the end. By evening, the data was flowing smoothly.
Sunday: Sunday was dedicated to fixing bugs and adding a couple of new features I’d been putting off. Debugging is always a pain, but I squashed a few particularly nasty ones. The new features were actually kinda fun to implement, a nice change of pace.
The Final Push: By Sunday evening, I was exhausted, but the project was in WAY better shape. I pushed all the changes to the repo, ran a few final tests, and then… collapsed on the couch.
The Result: Was it perfect? Nah. But it was a HUGE improvement. The UI was cleaner, the data handling was solid, and the bugs were (mostly) gone. Plus, I learned a ton in the process.
Lessons Learned:
- Planning is Key: That “to-do” list I made at the start was a lifesaver.
- Focus is Your Friend: Blocking out dedicated time made a massive difference.
- Don’t Be Afraid to Refactor: Ripping out the old data system was scary, but it was the right call.
- Take Breaks: Burnout is real. Step away from the screen every now and then.
Would I do it again? Absolutely. The “golden blitz” approach is a great way to make serious progress on a project in a short amount of time. Just be prepared to be tired afterwards!
