So, the other day, I was tinkering with some text on my Mac, you know, just typing away. And then it hit me – I needed to pop in that little copyright symbol, the one that looks like a ‘C’ inside a circle: ©.
I paused for a moment, trying to remember the magic trick. My mind just drew a blank. You know how it is with these things; you use them once in a blue moon and then poof, the memory’s gone. I started thinking, “Okay, where do I even find this thing?” I vaguely remembered there being some kind of character viewer, but that always feels like such a drag to open up just for one symbol.
I figured there had to be a keyboard shortcut. Macs are usually pretty good with those. So, I did a little experimenting, tried a few random combinations with the Command key, the Shift key… nothing. Just got a bunch of beeps or typed the wrong letters. Frustrating, to say the least, when you just want to get one simple thing done.
Then, after a bit of fiddling – maybe I did a quick search, I can’t quite remember the exact sequence of events – I stumbled upon the solution. And honestly, it was so straightforward I felt a bit silly for not knowing it all along.
It turns out, all I had to do was press and hold the Option key. You know, that key that sits next to the Command key on either side of the spacebar. Sometimes it even has ‘alt’ written on it, depending on your keyboard.
So, with the Option key held down, I then just tapped the G key. Just a simple press of the letter ‘G’.
And like magic, there it was: ©. The copyright symbol appeared right where my cursor was. No fuss, no digging through menus. Just Option + G.
I tried it a couple more times just to make sure it wasn’t a fluke. Yep, worked every time. It’s one of those super simple tricks that, once you know it, you can’t believe you didn’t know it before. Saved me a bit of time and a headache, that’s for sure. So, just thought I’d pass that little nugget of info along from my own experience. Pretty handy to have in your back pocket if you ever need it!
