My ‘Young Beckham’ Experiment
Okay, so I’ve been messing around with trying to recreate that classic ‘young Beckham’ hairstyle. You know, the floppy, textured curtains. It’s harder than it looks, let me tell you.

First, I started by actually growing my hair out a bit. I usually keep it pretty short, but you need some length to even attempt this. I’m talking a good 4-5 inches on top. This was the longest part, obviously. Just waiting.
Then, I went to my barber – a solid dude who’s been cutting my hair for years. I showed him a bunch of pictures of Beckham back in the day. We talked about getting that slightly messy, textured look, not too perfect, you know? He got it. He started by point-cutting into the top to create some of that texture, making sure it wasn’t too uniform. He used a razor for some of the layering which was new to me. He really took his time.
Next up was the product. This is crucial. I tried a few different things. First, I grabbed some cheap matte paste from the drugstore. Nope. Too heavy, made my hair look greasy. Then, I tried a sea salt spray. Better, but not enough hold. What finally worked was a lightweight texturizing clay. I warm a little up in my hands, then work it through my hair, starting at the roots. I like to focus on the front, kinda pushing it up and over to the side to get that “curtain” effect. Less is more, trust me. You can always add more, but it’s a pain to wash out if you go overboard.
After applying the clay, I use a hairdryer on a low setting to help shape the style. I mainly use my fingers to lift and direct the hair. The hairdryer just helps to set things in place. Don’t overdo it with the heat – you don’t want to fry your hair.
Finally, I use a matte hairspray to keep it all in place. Just a light misting all over. I find if I skip this step, my hair falls flat within a couple of hours.

It’s not perfect. It takes some practice to get the hang of it. But after a few weeks of experimenting, I’m actually pretty happy with how it turned out. Definitely channeling some serious ’90s Beckham vibes. My wife thinks I look ridiculous, but hey, you can’t please everyone, right?
- Grow your hair out: Get some length!
- Good haircut is key: Find a barber who understands the look.
- Experiment with product: Lightweight texturizing clay is your friend.
- Hairdryer for shaping: Low heat and finger styling.
- Matte hairspray: Keeps it all in place.
Give it a shot! It’s fun to try new things. Just don’t be afraid to experiment and find what works best for you.
