Alright, so I decided to really sit down and go through my memories of that whole 2012-13 Lakers season. It’s a period I’ve thought about a lot, trying to piece together what exactly happened from my point of view as someone who followed it closely.

Who played for the 2012-13 Los Angeles Lakers? A quick guide to their star players.

My Initial Excitement – Thinking We Had It Made

I remember when the news broke. First Steve Nash, then Dwight Howard. Joining Kobe, Pau Gasol… man, I was hyped. I mean, who wasn’t? On paper, it looked like a championship was practically gift-wrapped. I started picturing the parades, the domination. I even cleared my schedule, thinking I’d be watching a lot of deep playoff runs.

The First Cracks – When Things Started Feeling Off

Then the season actually started. And almost right away, things felt… weird. The team just wasn’t gelling. I watched those early games, and it was clunky. Mike Brown was out pretty quick, just five games in, if I remember right. I thought, “Okay, maybe a new coach will fix it.” Then Mike D’Antoni came in. I tried to be optimistic, thinking his system might unlock something with Nash.

But the problems seemed deeper. I kept noticing things:

  • Nash getting hurt early on. That was a big blow. His body just couldn’t hold up, it seemed.
  • Dwight. He just never looked comfortable, or happy, really. The free throws were painful to watch, and the whole “will he stay, will he go” drama was already brewing.
  • The chemistry, or lack thereof. It was like watching a bunch of talented individuals, not a cohesive unit. Passes would go astray, defensive assignments blown.

Digging In – Trying to Understand the Mess

I spent a lot of time back then, and even now looking back, trying to figure out the core issues. It wasn’t just one thing. It was a perfect storm, really. You had injuries, massive egos, different philosophies on how to play. D’Antoni’s system didn’t seem to fit the personnel, especially with Pau. I remember watching Pau look lost sometimes out there on the perimeter.

And Kobe. Man, Kobe. He was putting in an unbelievable effort. Night after night, he was dragging that team, trying to will them into the playoffs. The minutes he was playing were insane. You could see the toll it was taking on him, but he just kept pushing. I really admired that grit, even as I worried he was overdoing it.

The Unthinkable Moment

And then it happened. That game against the Warriors. When Kobe went down with the Achilles injury. I was watching, and I just felt sick. All that effort, all that fight, and then to see him go down like that, knowing it was serious… it was heartbreaking. Him hitting those free throws before walking off, that was just pure Kobe. But it also felt like the final nail in the coffin for any real hope that season had.

The Inevitable End

They made the playoffs, somehow. But without Kobe, it was clear what was coming. Getting swept by the Spurs in the first round. It wasn’t a surprise, but it was still a really depressing way for such a hyped season to end. It felt like a whimper after all the initial noise.

So, yeah, revisiting that 2012-13 Lakers season, it’s a practice in remembering frustration, disappointment, but also a weird kind of awe at Kobe’s sheer will. It just goes to show, I guess, that star power alone doesn’t guarantee anything in sports. A tough lesson that year, for sure. A real tough one.
