So, I got curious today about what season they’re having in China right now. It just popped into my head, maybe because the weather’s changing here and I started thinking globally.

My first thought was, well, it’s autumn here in my part of the world, so it’s probably autumn there too, right? Usually, the northern hemisphere seasons kinda stick together. But then I stopped myself. China is huge! Like, really massive. Saying “China” is like saying “Europe” almost, weather-wise. The north is crazy different from the south.
So, I decided I needed to do a bit more than just guess. I grabbed my phone, figured I’d check the weather in a couple of major spots to get a real feel for it.
First, I looked up Beijing. Makes sense, it’s the capital, pretty far north. Checked the forecast. Yeah, temperatures were like highs in the 60s Fahrenheit (around 15-20°C), cooling down quite a bit at night. Looked pretty sunny mostly. That totally screams autumn to me. Crisp air, leaves changing, that kind of vibe.
Okay, one data point. Then I thought, let’s check the south. I looked up Guangzhou (Canton) down near Hong Kong. Big difference! Highs were still way up there, like touching 80°F (high 20s °C), felt much warmer, more humid too. That felt less like the crisp autumn Beijing had, maybe more like a very late summer or a super mild start to autumn.
Then I checked Shanghai, kinda in the middle coastally. It was somewhere in between Beijing and Guangzhou, leaning more towards cooler autumn temps but not as crisp as Beijing maybe.

Okay, time to put it together
So my little investigation showed me my initial simple guess wasn’t totally wrong, but it lacked the detail. You can’t just give one answer for all of China.
- In the North (like Beijing): It’s definitely Autumn. Cool, crisp, clear days mostly.
- In the South (like Guangzhou): It feels more like late Summer or very early, warm Autumn. Still quite warm and can be humid.
- Central/Coastal (like Shanghai): Generally Autumn, but milder than the north, cooler than the south.
So, the simple answer is yes, generally, China is in Autumn right now, especially thinking about the calendar months (September, October, November). But the experience of that season really changes depending on where you are. It was a good reminder that you gotta look a little closer sometimes, even for simple questions. Just checking a couple of spots gave me a much better picture than just guessing based on my own location.
