Okay, so I wanted to get back into a team sport, something with a bit of rough and tumble, you know? I’d heard about the Denver Women’s Rugby team, so I figured, why not give it a shot? This is how the whole thing went down.

First, I looked them up. Gotta find out where these ladies practice, right? Found their details pretty easily, thankfully. No secret society stuff here.

Finding a Practice

Next, I showed up. I’ll admit, I was nervous. I hadn’t played a team sport since, gosh, high school? But everyone was super welcoming. Lots of “Hey, you new?” and “Glad you’re here!” kind of stuff. Made me feel a lot better.

  • Warming up: We did some basic stretches, nothing crazy, just to get the blood flowing.
  • Some simple Drills:
    • We did some passing drills.
    • worked on some tackling techniques.

I learned that there’s more to rugby than just running with the ball. It is a real workout!

Scrimmage Time!

Then came the scary part – a practice scrimmage. I was thrown in, basically. And let me tell you, I got tackled. Hard. A few times. But you know what? It was… exhilarating! I actually enjoyed the physicality of it, the teamwork, the strategy. It was all surprisingly fun, even when I was face down in the grass.

After the practice, everyone was so supportive. High-fives, pats on the back, even though I was clearly a newbie. I felt like I was already part of the team, even though I was still learning the ropes (and picking grass out of my teeth).

So, that was my first taste of women’s rugby in Denver. I’m definitely going back. I’m sore, I’m probably going to be bruised tomorrow, but I’m also feeling pretty darn good. And I might even get good at it eventually! If you’re thinking about trying something new, I totally recommend giving this a shot.
