Alright, so I found myself with some time in Auckland and figured I should probably see what this city’s all about. Didn’t really make a big plan, you know, just decided to get out there and see what I stumbled upon. That’s usually how I like to do things anyway.

First Impressions and Going Up
First thing you notice, like really notice, is the Sky Tower sticking up. It’s everywhere you look. So, I thought, might as well start there. Got myself a ticket and went up. The elevator ride was surprisingly fast. Once at the top, wow, the views are something else. You really get a sense of the whole city, the two harbours on either side, Rangitoto Island sitting out there. I spent quite a bit of time just gazing out, pointing things out to myself. It helps get your bearings early on.
Wandering the Waterfront
After coming back down to earth, I just started walking towards the water. Ended up around the Viaduct Harbour. It’s got a lively feel, loads of shiny boats, fancy looking places to eat and drink. Didn’t stop for food there – looked a bit expensive for my liking – but it was nice just to stroll along the edge, watch the yachts bobbing about. Felt good to get that sea air. Continued wandering along the waterfront, just taking it all in. It’s quite spread out but pleasant enough.
Hopping on a Ferry
Heard a few people mention the ferries are a good way to see things. Seemed like a decent idea. Decided to take a trip over to Devonport. Looked easy and quick on the map. Bought my ticket at the terminal – simple process – and hopped on board. It’s only a short ride, maybe 10-15 minutes? But you get great views looking back at the city skyline from the water. Devonport itself felt different, more like a relaxed little village. Had a walk around, saw the old buildings. Climbed up North Head, one of those volcanic cones. More amazing views from up there. A nice little half-day excursion, broke things up a bit.
Green Spaces and History
Needed a bit of green after all the concrete and water. Made my way to the Auckland Domain. It’s this massive park, really quite impressive. Found the Wintergardens, two big glasshouses full of plants. One tropical, one temperate. Spent a while in there, very peaceful. The Auckland War Memorial Museum is plonked right on the hill in the Domain too. Big, imposing building. Popped in for a look, didn’t do the whole thing but saw some interesting Maori treasures and learned a bit about the history.
Climbing a Volcano (Sort Of)
Someone told me, “You gotta climb Mt Eden”. It’s another one of those volcanic cones, but right near the city centre. So, off I went. It’s a bit of an uphill walk, gets the heart pumping, but totally manageable. When you get to the top, you’re standing on the edge of this huge grassy crater bowl. And the views… honestly, I think they might be even better than the Sky Tower in some ways. Felt more natural, less touristy. You get a full 360-degree sweep of Auckland and beyond. Sat up there for ages just soaking it in.

Final Thoughts and Food
What else? Food was pretty good. Found some great little places, especially for Asian food, tucked away off the main drags. Lots of variety. Overall, Auckland felt quite spread out. You definitely need to use your feet or the buses or ferries to connect the dots. What I liked was the mix:
- The city centre buzz.
- Easy access to the water.
- Plenty of green spaces and hills for views.
It’s not one of those cities that hits you in the face immediately, you sort of need to explore its different pockets. But yeah, enjoyed my time just wandering and seeing what I found. It’s a pretty decent place to explore for a few days. That was my Auckland experience, just taking it slow and seeing the sights as I went.
