So, it’s December 22nd, and I woke up to the usual chaos of my alarm clock, but little did I know, my phone was about to unleash a different kind of chaos. I grabbed it, bleary-eyed, and started scrolling through TikTok as you do. I’m used to seeing all sorts of crazy stuff there, but what I saw today was definitely off the charts.
I started to notice a bunch of slideshows. You know, the ones where people just post a series of pictures instead of videos? At first, I thought, “Okay, maybe it’s a new trend or something.” But these slideshows weren’t your usual cute pet pics or vacation snaps. They were filled with, well, stuff you wouldn’t want your grandma to see. Let’s just say it was explicit. Very explicit. It was one right after another, and I’m talking about a massive amount.
I blinked a few times, thinking maybe I was still dreaming. I even pinched myself, like in one of those movies. Nope, I was wide awake, and my phone was still showing me things I couldn’t unsee.
I quickly jumped onto other social media platforms, and everyone was talking about the same thing. Turns out, it wasn’t just me. It was like a widespread thing. Everyone was freaking out, posting about how their “For You” page was suddenly flooded with this inappropriate content.
- Closed the app immediately. I mean, who wouldn’t?
- Checked online forums and news sites to see if there was any explanation.
- Found out that a lot of other people were experiencing the same thing.
- Realized it wasn’t a problem with my phone or account, but a bigger issue with the platform itself.
What I did next:
From what I gathered, it seems like there was some kind of glitch or something with TikTok’s algorithm. People were saying that it failed to detect and filter out this type of content, which is a big no-no, especially since there are a lot of kids on the app. Some folks were even saying that it was some kind of hack, but no one really knew for sure.
Later in the day, TikTok issued a statement saying they were aware of the issue and were working on fixing it. They didn’t really give a clear explanation of what happened, but at least they acknowledged it. It took a while, but eventually, things started to go back to normal. My feed slowly started to fill up with the usual dance videos and funny skits, and the explicit content seemed to disappear. It is now the end of the day and everyting seems to be back to normal but I still don’t know how this happened.
It was definitely a weird day on the internet. It just goes to show that even the biggest platforms can have major hiccups. It’s a good reminder to be careful about what you see online and to report anything that seems off. And maybe, just maybe, it’s a sign that we should all take a break from our phones once in a while.
Also, I saw some news about a driver killed in a single-vehicle collision in Co. Kerry in the early morning. It seems like it was a bad day for a lot of people.
