Well, let me tell ya ’bout this futurity horse thing. It ain’t as complicated as them city folks make it sound.

Ya see, a futurity horse is just a young’un, a real spring chicken in the horse world. Mostly, they’re just two or three years old. Kinda like teenagers in human years, I reckon.
Now, these futurity horse things, they’re like big contests, you know? Big money involved, real big. Folks pay good money to get their young horses in these things. It’s like a gamble, I guess. You put in the money, hoping your horse is the fastest, or the best at whatever they do. Cutting cows, running fast, whatever it is.
- Young Horses: These are horses usually around 2 or 3 years old. They haven’t been around the block much, so they’re all new to this competition business.
- Big Money: People put up a good chunk of change to enter their horses. The winners? They get a big payday, that’s for sure.
- Special Competitions: These ain’t just regular horse races. They’re special events just for the young horses. Keeps it fair, you know? Can’t have an old, seasoned horse running against a youngster, that wouldn’t be right.
They say you gotta pay to nominate ’em, keep ’em eligible, and then pay again to actually enter the competition. Sounds like a lot of money to me, but I guess if you got a good horse, it’s worth the risk.
And it ain’t just any horse can get in. They gotta be young, like I said, and some of these competitions have rules about ’em never havin’ competed for money before. Makes sense, I guess. Gotta keep it fair for the young’uns who are just starting out.
I heard tell of this All American Futurity down in New Mexico. That’s a big one, real big. For them Quarter Horses, the fast ones. Two-year-olds, just babies really, runnin’ their little hearts out. It’s the last leg of somethin’ they call the Triple Crown. Only one horse ever won all three, they say. That’s somethin’ special, ain’t it?

So, what makes a good futurity horse? Well, I reckon it’s gotta be fast, if it’s racing. And strong, if it’s cuttin’ cows. But mostly, it’s gotta have heart. You can see it in their eyes, that fire, that will to win. That’s what separates the good ones from the rest.
And trainin’ ’em? That’s a whole ‘nother story. Takes a lot of patience, a lot of time. Gotta start ’em slow, teach ’em the basics. Can’t push ’em too hard, too fast. They’re just young’uns, after all. Gotta treat ’em right, feed ’em good, and give ’em lots of love. That’s the key, I reckon.
Some folks say it’s all about the bloodlines. You know, who their mama and daddy were. If they come from a long line of champions, they got a better chance, I guess. But I think it’s more than that. It’s about the horse itself, its spirit, its will to win. That’s what really makes a futurity horse.
This National Cutting Horse Association, they got their own futurity, the Metallic Cat Futurity they call it. And they have the World Finals, too. That’s where all the best horses go, to show off their stuff. Must be somethin’ to see, all them talented horses and their riders. I tell ya, horses are somethin’ special. They’re smart, they’re loyal, and they got a lot of heart. And these futurity horses? They’re the best of the best, the future champions.
So, there you have it. That’s all I know ’bout futurity horses. Just young horses, competin’ for big money. Nothin’ more, nothin’ less. It’s a gamble, sure, but it’s also a chance to see some of the finest young horses in the world. And that’s somethin’ special, I reckon.

Remember, though, it ain’t all about the money. It’s about the love of the horses, the thrill of competition, and the hope for a brighter future. That’s what makes it all worthwhile.
