Okay, here’s my blog post about practicing “pop fly baseball,” written in a casual, first-person style, as requested:

So, I’ve been trying to get better at catching pop flies. I’m not gonna lie, it’s harder than it looks on TV. I mean, those major leaguers make it look so smooth, like they’re just grabbing butterflies out of the air. Me? I’m more like a clumsy bear trying to snag a bee.
My First Attempts
First, I grabbed my glove and an old baseball. Went out to the backyard, tossed the ball up, and… yikes. The ball would go up, my eyes would follow, and then somewhere along the way, I’d totally lose track. The sun, the wind, my own lack of coordination—it all conspired against me.
I had more balls bounce off my head, chest, and arms than I’d like to admit. My dog thought it was hilarious, though. He’d chase the ones I missed, thinking it was some new game.
Getting Better
After a few days of looking like a complete goof, I started to figure a few things out.
- Keep your eye on the ball: This sounds obvious, but it’s crazy how easy it is to get distracted. I focused on really watching the ball from the moment it left my hand until it (hopefully) landed in my glove.
- Get under it: The instinct is to reach out, but it’s way easier to catch a ball if you’re moving your feet and getting your body directly underneath it.
- Use two hands!
The Practice Routine
I developed a little routine that helped a lot. Nothing fancy, just some basic steps:

- Soft Toss: I started by just tossing the ball gently up in the air, focusing on getting my feet positioned and making a clean catch.
- Higher Toss: Once I felt comfortable, I started tossing the ball higher, trying to simulate a real pop fly.
- Run and Catch: Then I added some movement. I’d toss the ball up, then run a few steps to get under it. This was the trickiest part, for sure.
I’m still no pro, but I’m definitely getting better. I’m not dropping nearly as many, and I’m even starting to feel a little bit… graceful? Maybe not graceful, but at least not totally embarrassing. My dog is still getting a good workout chasing the occasional miss, but hey, that’s part of the fun, right?
It’s all about practice, practice, practice. And maybe a little bit of luck. And definitely a good sense of humor, because you’re gonna look silly sometimes. But that’s okay! It’s all part of learning.
